What did you do for your 968 this week?

Removing the lifters wasn’t all that easy,  particularly the bottom end of the one next to the battery .  Could not get enough space to maneuver and get enough leverage  to pop it out, but fortunately I replaced the battery also , so I removed the battery first , and then did the lifter .

Was going to use a broom to hold up the hood, but that would have left my mother in law without transportation for a while, ( JUUUST KIDDING  !  ) .    Tongue       But seriously folks, I did find a broom stick which fit perfectly .

Unfortunately, after 14 years of fun, I've decided to sell my 968 ..... a matter of making life less complicated/busy. I've already done what was needed around the engine and suspension, and the bodywork is solid, so now I'm attending to all the details which don't affect the car performance but do change the degree of perfection and hence the price.

1. Ambient temp gauge fixed and fitted - thanks to Waylander for his work.

2. Windscreen surrounds straightened .... reversal of years of sun damage.

3. Screw covers inserted .... a friend has a 3D printer so I got him to make up the caps that go on various screw holes.

4. Adjust cab roof for smooth operation .... still struggling with that .... well, my body is!

5. I need to look into replacing the binding around the top ridge of the boot/trunk carpet, where it tucks up into the bodywork .... ANYONE DONE THIS?? Advice welcome ....

6. Central arm rest purchased .... given how weak they are I shall fit it 5 minutes prior to any viewing.

7. Plenty of polishing coming up!!

As said, it's just the fiddly bits Sad

Making life less complicated seems to come with age. Sorry to see you go.

Me too!  Great great great forum .... that, of course, means the participants .... you guys .... thank you!

However, I still have 14 posts to go to reach 1000 .... so I'm not gone yet Smile Smile

And on that vein here's another ..... just fixed my roof for which both motors moved okay and I know were synched as I did that a few years back, and you can hear if one is running and the other is not.

The instructions say to pull the circulation mechanism back as far as possible whilst holding two of the levers together as close as possible, and then tighten the housing bolts .... I'm lucky if I can walk and chew gum simultaneously let alone do three things Sad

The photo shows my solution, and instead of using the flat part of the clamps, which kept slipping, I pushed the clamps passed the levers so the clamps couldn't slip and then gripped those levers.  I found that the circular drive housing was already pulled back as far as possible so I just tightened the bolts to see how it would go.

Now goes up and down as it should.  Opens no worries at all, closes a little quickly as it reaches the windscreen and gravity gets involved, but that's a matter of putting one's hand up at the last minute.  I'm very happy Smile

Drove my car yesterday for the first time in a really long time. I remembered why I enjoyed it so. Although the black interior is just hot. Yes the AC works fine but I like to hear the car!

Time, weather, and ambition harmonically converged today and I finally pulled the instrument cluster to address the non-working odometer issue.   Yes, the cluster can be removed without removing the steering wheel and dealing with the whole air bag issue.  (I did at least disconnect the battery as a precaution).  I had been dreading this, but it turned out to be a bit easier than I had anticipated.   The tiny little broken gear looks a little different, and is in a different place, than the broken odometer gears in the 944 youtube videos, but I figured it out.   Ordered the tiny little 15 tooth gear and the 16 tooth gear it sits on (these come in 15, 16, and 17 gear versions - you have to crack open the speedo and count the teeth to figure out which one came with the car).   A couple of teeth on my tiny gear were broken/melted.   I decided to replace both gears as long as I’m in there.   $25 each.

While I have the cluster out, I am also replacing the three cluster bulbs with one of these LED conversion strips I found on eBay.

Now I’m waiting for the gears to arrive.   The plan is to put it all back together next weekend.

That's a very interesting/informative link, thanks.  I have a strip of 12v dimmable LEDs left over from a kitchen project, I may just be motivated enough to pull the display.  Good luck with your effort Bill,

I'm presently shining up the plastic panels under the bonnet ...... paint-stripper first (erasing little spots left behind by a previous owner/painter), then white spirit, and finally wax polish.  Amazing the flaws I can see when I have a really close look!  I guess it also indicates all the major jobs have been done.

Remarkable DIY,  Bill !   I would never have the patience to try anything like that , and probably not the skill even if I had the patience.

I finally received my baby girl, all the way from Reno!  Took her for a spin; spent 2 hours of my life that I'll never get back in the NC DMV to have her titled, registered and plated - and then I gave her a bath!  I'm so happy with my decision!

So, I think that's it for under the bonnet/hood, I cannot be bothered to do any more .....

The new odometer gears arrived.   I put the speedometer back together.  I then discovered that the wires on the LED array were about 1/2” too sort, which necessitated some soldering and splicing.   Got the cluster back together and coaxed the it back behind the wheel.   I’ll finish the job tomorrow.  Here’s a pic of the old gear that turned yellow and lost a tooth.

Thanks Bill.

I'm hoping you read this before putting your display back in ..... don't forget to clean up the various terminals on the unit.  I'm sure you've read the thread on how it has improved many a gauge reading (including on mine) , but just in case .....

Have a good weekend (y)

Got the dash put back together and took it for a test run.  Everything works!   The odometer, the trip meter, even the little hidden button the zeros out the trip meter.  (I remember the first day I had the car, I went crazy trying to figure out how to zero out the trip meter).   By the way, according to several  sources I found while researching the broken odometer issue, the claim I’ve heard for years that “depressing the reset button while the car is in motion will break it” is an old wive’s tale.  OTOH, I haven’t tried it.

Great job! Never had to do this fix and hope to never have to.

The 968 odometer is not mechanically connected to the transmission like the Porsche 901 transmissions are (think 911, 914, 930...). Those type odometers absolutely will break if the mechanical counter is reset while the car is moving because there is a square drive cable from the transmission to the odometer that turns the gears inside old VDO odometers. When you reset these odometers while in motion the cable drive is turning the gears forward at the same time your reset turning is moving them backwards. One or both plastic gears then break.

A 968 odometer trip reset is electrical - no mechanical connection. But, like you, I still have have trepidation about hitting the reset while in motion. Probably better to keep your eyes on the road anyway...

I ordered new gears from odometer gears. The old ones were completely gone, and they weren't that old. We got it back together and voila` they don't work.

This was after sending odometer gears high resolution close up photos so they could count the teeth and they still got it wrong.

I still have to contact them as I am not happy, but will have to buy new gears due to time delay in getting back to them

Either that or the car will be forever young.

I haven't put 200 miles on it this year, so not too worried about it and the odometer is exempt due to age anyways.

my mechanic can have the steering wheel / airbag and cluster out in less than 15 minutes. Easier then trying to wiggle it out while "holding you mouth just right".

I ordered mine from odometergears.com.    (Pelican Parts also has the gears, but charged more for shipping and charged tax which odometergears.com didn’t charge).   I counted the teeth myself.   The gears arrived from cross country in under a week and worked perfectly.   I viewed removing the cluster without removing the steering wheel as the lesser of two evils.   As it turned out, it was far easier than I anticipated.   And I really like the new LED cluster lighting.
