Gas prices

Quote:To an uneducated guy like me, why is California gas only refined in Ca? Are there other states that only refine their own gas and are captive? I’ve read that most gas stations are owner operated and not run by the major gas companies. Why would halting taxes lower prices at the pump? Are there laws that state if taxes are lowered they must be deducted from the price of a gallon of gas? Sounds like price controls.
No idea on the first part of the question .  As for State taxes, yes they are applied directly to the pump price , the stations pay that portion directly to the State, they do not ( nor the gas companies ) keep any of it.   So suspending taxes will reduce the price by the amount of tax that’s abated .   But it’s not certain yet which of the state gas  taxes will be suspended, because there are several components ;  the excise tax is 0.30 / gal. , the summer clean air tax, is another 0.22,  and there are two other taxes ( I think ) bringing the grand total taxes amount to about 0.75 gal  , so although not a huge relief given the current total per gallon cost, it’s better then nothing.   But the state stands to lose a lot of revenue, and I have a suspicion ( almost no doubt actually  ) they’ll increase some other taxes to make up for this ..

I think there is a lot of fear and uncertainty priced into the recent spike in oil/gas prices, because the amount of the increase is out out of line with the amount of Russian oil that has come off the market.  As the invasion, and probable future occupation, of Ukraine drags on for what will be months, and very possibly years, unless Putin's regime is deposed, and Russian oil output continues to be constrained, alternate suppies will move in to replace the lost output.  Also, hopefully demand will drop off somewhat as people figure out ways to drive less, move to more economical vehicles, and eventually electric cars become more desirable and affordable.  This should stabilize prices, and eventually bring them down.  So hopefully the worst of the increases are behind us, but the current level may very well be the new normal, unless something like another pandemic comes along.

What’s really discouraging is that almost all of the companies who informed their employees that they can work from home permanently,  have completely reversed their stance and are mandating a back to the office m.o., on a daily basis .   With that, needless to say comes the return of traffic insanity ( at least in Ca ) and gasoline demand .  Furthermore the state has revoked all hybrids cars right to commute lanes years ago, and I understand that most fully electric vehicles will also gradually lose that privilege ( many older ones already have ..) by the end of this year,  and the overwhelming majority of EV owners here bought their car for that specific privilege, not some altruistic “save the environment” reasoning.  This is going to be one pissed , and very large group of folks.. but guess what , they don’t have a prayer changing the state’s rulings, nor do companies like Tesla have anyway near the leverage to change anything in that respect .  So future EV sales in this state will depend entirely on gas prices and eventually rules which mandate the sale of any new cars in the state to be EVs.

I don't know answer as to why there are no gasoline pipelines to California except that California had plenty of locally produced produced oil and therefore abundant gasoline. A lot of the oil refined in California comes from Alaska. Gas that is imported to California comes by tanker, a three to four week journey from refineries on the Gulf Coast. The tankers are too large to through the Panama Canal so must pass around Cape Horn, or come from somewhere in Asia across the Pacific Ocean.

Now that’s an idea. This must be why you get paid the big bucks. One of our horses can no longer compete. Perhaps we can harness a buggy. Springtime is coming. Imagine a nice ride with a line of cars baked up behind us as we slowly amble down the road.

Our illustrious governor, (ie..moron) is going to drop the tax on gas for one month in October. The month there are the fewest amount of tourists in the state and not surprisingly one month in front of the elections. I hate conniving politicians.

Here's my next car I am looking at on carvana...

Great car, but it needs stiffer suspension, and m030 bars - it always tilts over when you go for the brontosaurus bbq ribs takeout .

Good point .

BTW, I just spent $ 75 for exactly half a tank of gas .  At Chevron . With the Chevron refinery 35 miles from here .

( 22 gallon tank )

I’m confused as to why people are upset with high gas prices. Am I missing something? Biden ran on a platform of ending fossil fuels. His first act as president was to cancel the pipeline. He has done and is doing what he told the voters he would do. Voters agreed with this course of action and voted him into the White House. Gas prices were rising before Putin. Voters are getting what they voted for. How come they are not happy?

A very nice, comprehensive article.  No offense to Rap, but blaming today's high gas prices on Biden is just silly.  And I'm a (recovering) Republican, although the emergence of Trump and Trumpism and the ensuing descent into madness of my lifelong party is making it highly unlikely I will vote Republican again anytime soon.  Prices were already strongly on the rise during the waning months of the Trump administration, because demand was climbing again as people were driving more.  This escalated as the Covid vaccines became available, and from the effects of natural immunity among those previously infected with Covid.  The lingering supply chain issues, shortage of truckers, etc. further contributed to the problem.  Steps like cancelling the pipeline or advocating green energy had negligible effect on current gas prices.
