Call me cynical, but I’m seeing a HUGE spike in the demand for gas vehicles at the moment ..maybe because the people who are seeing that market being eventually taken over by EVs want to hold on to whatever is available in the “real cars” domain,  for the duration .   For example , most EVs ( new and used ) sell below MSRP,  whereas almost all gas cars ( new and used ) sell way above market price / value  right now.  Maybe sort lived though..

Off of the coasts and large urban areas is there such a big demand? I’ve read ev’s are 4% of total sales. Don’t see many around here and most are Tesla’s.

Yes, other than the occasional Mustang, Teslas are the vast majority of EV's around here as well.  It's going to a long time for EVs to become a significant component of new car sales.  It will be interesting to see if prolonged high gas prices will accelerate the process, but I have my doubts it will have much impact.  EVs' persistently high price tags will be an ongoing drag on their rate of acceptance.  Unless gas prices hit truly nutso territory, like $20/gal, but I doubt that will happen.

So it’s time to replace my front tires ( on the Maserati ),  price with tax just about $ 400 each .   So $ 800 for two tires is certainly no “ pocket  change “,  but and then I looked at it this way ;  they typically last me about 25,000 miles / approx two years of daily driving.   A full tank of gas now costs me about $ 135 which at the current driving habit consumption barely lasts me for the 5 days weekly commute .  So let’s just say with one extra detour, my monthly gas expense is about $ 550 every month !   Suddenly the tires seem to be a good value ..by comparison ..  :glare:

4 Hoosiers total cost $2000. Maybe 16-18 heat cycles if properly managed with ending grip not as good as starting. Proper tire inflation on dd’s help tire wear and longevity plus gas mileage. Most folks just get in their cars and drive.

it was $90 to fill up the truck this week in Central FL.

I think it's $4.39 gal today.

Our Gov is letting them knock off the gas tax for Oct because it's the month with the least amount of tourists and oh, it's right before the elections.

It's still cheaper then a $1400 monthly car payment on an electric SUV

I look at it this way, anyone who lives in CA, deserves what they get. High prices, gun control, and stupid politicians.

They don't print enough money to make me ever want to visit that stupid state. NY too.

I may spend my declining final years on an island in the Caribbean so I don't have to be destroyed by our politicians greed.

Haha, that’s just laughable ..so millions of people all over the WORLD who are climbing over one another to move here and wiling to pay absurd prices for real estate and everything else for that matter, must not be aware of how terrible it is to live in California .  For everyone who left this state there are ten others in line waiting to get in.  Hell, I wouldn’t live anywhere else if someone paid me !   

But I do hope everyone else feels the same way you do, and they stay out, we’re overpopulated as it is .. 

Politicians are idiots everywhere, California doesn’t have the monopoly on that .  Have you taken a good look at the politicians who run the red states ( aka red neck states ) who hijacked the GOP which at one point was a respectable party , now succumbing to fringe , insane morons ?

I grew up in California, and would move back in a heartbeat if circumstances allowed.  Gorgeous state with unlimited numbers of things to do, and weather that's comfortable year-round.   Its biggest problem is over-crowding, particularly on its roads, for the very reason DS points out - it's such a phenomenally desirable place to live that an unmanageable number of people want to move there, despite the cost.

They showed a gas station in Death Valley CA , yesterday  ( admittedly,  it’s a place which has always had much, much higher gas prices at the maybe two stations in the entire 3,000 sq. mi. area …well, not sure how many gas stations there are , but I drove trough there once and don’t recall more than a couple…). with all gas above $ 9 !   $ 9.79 for 91 octane.    

 

Ca governor indicated he’ll eliminate the sate’s summer grade tax, and even reduce the current tax to some extent , but I don’t know when that’ll take effect , haven’t heard when that’s going to take effect… it’s not yet at the pumps ..

<div>What really sucks is the fact that we use very little crude oil from Russia to produce fuel.  Somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 to 7% ...as opposed to Europe's 60% and China's 20%.   But crude is sold and traded as a global commodity so when the price is affected for one, it's affected for all...   Local rip-off  b.s. , using a "global" excuse .. ! 
 
So even If the U.S. were to ban the import of oil from Russia, guess what.... :glare:

But Russia only produces 11% of the world's oil, so one would think that even if Russia stopped producing oil altogether (which hasn't come close to happening, nor is it likely to), oil/gas prices should only rise by a maximum of about 11%, right?:

I've said this before, but it is worth repeating. The gasoline that is consumed on the west coast and that includes Oregon and Washington, is refined on the West Coast. There are no gasoline pipelines running to the west coast from anywhere in the US where gasoline is refined, unlike everywhere else in the country. We are a captive market.

To an uneducated guy like me, why is California gas only refined in Ca? Are there other states that only refine their own gas and are captive? I’ve read that most gas stations are owner operated and not run by the major gas companies. Why would halting taxes lower prices at the pump? Are there laws that state if taxes are lowered they must be deducted from the price of a gallon of gas? Sounds like price controls.
