Front Struts
#1

I have Bilstein HD on the rear of my 1992 968 Coupe, I put them on recently, it came with standard suspension. I'm looking ahead to the front struts which are still operating well but have 120,000 mi on them. Will our cars accept inserts, or do we have to change the whole assembly? I'm interested to hear your opinions before I start this project in the summer.

Hi Phil -

Our cars do accept Koni inserts for the front struts, I don't believe there are any Bilstein inserts available.

How do you like the Bilstein HD's?

I like the firm ride, the old ones weren't bad but these are a real improvement. Back seems to sit nicely in all conditions and that's important to me as I tend to drive fast, especially the twisty bits. Makes me feel the fronts are softer than I may have imagined before, now that I have a new point of refernce.

So as it seems I just keep looking to upgrade as I go along, I appreciate your input, thanks.

Koni is basically your only choice, aside from the overpriced OE stuff or super expensive track stuff. At least the konis are a good only choice.

actually, there is another choice, but still koni - they are about twice as expensive as the yellow sports, but worth every penny to me - MUCH better ride and setting control, with no gas preload issues - it is not a DIY though, and you have to send your struts out to be done

If you're willing to install a completely new set of struts and rear coilovers, you might consider KW. The following are some example discussions:

Yes, the KW do require a reindex of the torsion bars unless you have a club sport, as it is already set at the appropriate spot. Pete is actually working on something else for my KW-V3 to make them a little better.

Mark,

I will purchase the KW-V3 this month, but I'm still informing to get the rear KW-V3 with bigger springs and spherical bearings to delete the torsion bars.

Now you make me curious ... what is Pete developping to make these struts better ? ( I just receive my second package from RS Barn - strut brace, lower chassis brace).

Actually just changing out some of the springs.

OK,

My big issue with the KW isn't quality or valving (although valving could be changed) but the helper springs are too light. To get the ride height even close to resonable, the rear helper springs are totally colapsed and therefore you are only using the main spring. The ride is very harsh and darty. It also requires the rebound damping to be maxed out. I ordered some Eibach helper springs at a much higher rate which will give a 1/2 inch movement before transitioning to the main spring.

When I get this sorted out I can convert spring rate to Euro spring rate.

Pete

Rudi,

Let me know what Euro spring package they recommend without T bars. I'm sure I may have a slightly different view.

I have specs for reindexing the T bars for KW.

If you are deleting T bars you should use the Poly Bronze bearing vs Delran-Contact me for info

I must admit I was shocked when I saw that the helper was fully compressed. Pete, sorry you couldn't make it to dinner last night, but we didn't get home until 1:30 or later so it would have been really late for you.

Great post! I am going to change the suspension in my 968 to either the KW or Leda. I've also looked at the Kokeln complete replacement rear suspension kit.

I am still deciding on which route I will take. The great thing is that there are at least choices! ;-)

i have been looking at that unit for a long time now, and night be getting it soon - i need to reduce the negative camber on the rear, and that would make it easier than designing a camber kit - besides, it's another 25 lbs off the car

I would like to order the KW - V3 for my 968 cab. For a street car its seems that this is a nice setup. Following the instructions of KW, I will not delete the torsion bars (valving or spring rate issues ???). This leaves me just with the soft helper spring of the rear coilovers as Pete RS Barn is testing with an Eibach replacement.

Marc, can you tell alreay something about the behaviour of the rear susp. with the stronger Eibach helpers ?
