Front strut replacement options
#1

I'm going to be replacing my struts as a result of the state vehicle inspection. I've been happy with them, but the mechanic said otherwise.

The roads that I typically drive on are pretty rough by 968 standards, so a racing suspension is out. That being said, I do like to hug the turns at speed.

Sunset quoted me about ~ $475 for a pair of factory struts, while I can get a pair of Koni Performance for ~ $375. I'm tempted by the Koni's because of the price and because Performance Product describes them as "During the week leave the shocks at their softest setting (which will be somewhat stiffer than stock)." Having the option to stiffen them from time to time would be nice.

Does anyone have recommendations on these choices, and have I left out any good options?

Is there anything else I should be replacing at the same time?

Go with stock.

Although the koni's are cheaper, they require modifications to the existing strut housing and add labor and time to the R&R.

i ran the koni yellows for quite a while, and played with them with different springs and different settings - i wasn't totally unsatisfied with them, and i found some happy mediums, but it always involved some compromises

many people make the mistake of thinking that dialing up the konis "stiffens" the suspension - it does not - all it does is make the rebound firm, and make the car jittery - the bumps feel harder, so people think it's stiffer - springs are what make a suspension soft or firm - shocks and struts are only to dampen the springs

strut and/or shock settings are based on spring rates, and not for different performance settings, especially on units that only have rebound setting, like the koni yellow sports, where dialing up rebound only makes the car jittery and subject to bump steer - on a dual adjustable setup, you can dial up the compression on a track day or whatever, but rebound generally stays put - the koni yellow sports don't give you adjustable compression, so you would just set them and leave them

if you aren't changing springs to something stiffer, i'd stay stock - if you want to bump up a touch in spring rate, then the gas charge and slightly higher compression setting of the konis would be helpful

of course, anything you do to the front should be balanced in the rear, so you have to be careful how far you go, as the slippery slope then begins

I have the Koni Yellow Gas, Adjustable struts that I ordered from Jason Burkett atParagon Products. (paragon-products.com) Have used them for over four years and still like them as much as the first day after installation. They are so simple to adjust (a knob comes with them to make them soft or firm) and have a great warranty. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.
