ok, so here's a survey primarily for those of us who said over and over that we would NEVER sell our cars, unless that was the only thing keeping us from feeding our newborn baby :-) .. and even then it would be a toss-up..

but as they say, everything ( tangible objects anyway )has a price.. so as absurd as it may be vis-a-vis market value, really think about this; all else being equal, economic conditions do not compel you to consider selling, what would be the minimum price someone would have to offer you to say : - fine, I'll let mine go for $ X " , and no way no how would you consider anything materially below that figure ?

If there were no compelling reasons to sell and I was just putting it up with no real intentions or thoughts of getting my price, then $30,000 would be my price. Now before you all think and say that's ridiculous, delusional or just plain stupid remember no economic reason to sell. Supply demand and match a buyer with a product. Could lots of others under price that, of course. Add what you have put in in mods or repairs, realize it makes no sense to sell at a loss unless one is compelled, and perhaps the number isn't as obtuse as it seems.

And that's precisely the criteria ( as outlined in Rap's post ) I had in mind . Also make the asumption you will not be able to readily / easily find another 968 in a condition , color scheme, etc. to your liking that you could just buy right away with with the money from selling yours.

Lol Jim, I knew one of you guys would come up with that inquiry sooner or later.. it was sooner :-) I deliberately left my price out because I thought that might add a reference point which could in some small way influence others' responses, and that's what I was trying to avoid.. But I will definitely post that ( eventually ) along with the reasoning behind it, just waiting for a few more to chime in and feed my curiosity if no one lese's..

Mine is a 1994 Coupe wtih only <acronym title='Limited Slip Differential'>LSD</acronym> and Partial Leather, BUT ... is as close to factory new as one is going to get... less than 18K miles, with original air in the original tires on C2 Turbo (C2 Turbo (Cup 1))'s (stored and bagged), and now on 17's with Dunlop Z1's (fantastic tires!). Several minor upgrades incl. airbox mod to spare box (original saved and bagged), hidden radar detector, Alpine stereo, and D1 Racing Strut and Castor Block Braces (as soon as Bob gets them to me!!!)

Interior and exterior are both Concourse, with some cosmoline still stuck to the undercarriage, but clean enough!

Since it is "As New" or really better now, with a full 15K factory service (belts and all fluids included), I would sell it for what the Window Sticker says... $43K and change... But then again, after I took it out and terrorized the locals at twice the legal speed limit... Priceless!!!! Truly better than new Porsches today and they are twice the price!

I do not know for what I would sell mine for, but if it ended up in a collisions and the insurance co. decided to "write it off", I would want around $25K.

As mine would be quoted in AUD and not USD - it would have to be way north of $50k - more like the $75k mark and even then I am not sure that I could sell it.



Why around this mark - rebuilt engine (12 months ago) including ceramic coating of pistons and head/valves, coil-overs, big blacks and correct bias valve, <acronym title='Limited Slip Differential'>LSD</acronym>, full spherical bushing, camber plates, larger sway bars, stainless brake lines, RS Barn hi-flow Cat and Cat back exhaust, strut brace, lower strut brace, second oil cooler, supercharger and separate ECU + larger injectors and intercooler, race seat, 5 point harness, harness bar, lightweight flywheel and race clutch, Oe 17" rims and tyres, 18" Simmons race mags, another set of 18" Autoart road alloys, 21 mm spacers currently fitted, another set of bare 18" three piece turbo twists, numerous spares, Clubsport steering wheel, after market gear knob.



Pending fitment - larger crank pulley, larger alternator pulley (to slow it down), RSBarn brake pads, new splitter (current one is bashed and cracked - new one is a genuine Turbo RS item, new plastic grill to be fitted, 6-rib belt to be fitted, head/engine to be slightly decompressed, full service history since I have owned it (and prior).



I think I have almost run out of options to do to the car, unless I want to do more serious motorsport/tarmac rallying - and then it would be another race seat, terratrip and full roll cage.



When the Australian dollar was 60 US cents, it probably was not too bad a price (although a RH drive car). But now that the Australian dollar is around $1.05 USD - it is starting to get pricey. Remember that there were only 118 Porsche 968's imported into Australia and a 968 is now worth more than an early Boxter over here. Given the recent club motorsport success that these cars have had in Australia at a club level - they are in demand.



As above, if I can get the SC to work (I should know in late November/early December) and get around 400hp out of it - I don't think I will ever sell the car. When you look at an early 996 Turbo - they produced 414hp. It may not be as quick in a straight line, but the 968 with 400hp will blow a 996 Turbo away on a race track or autokhana.



Not sure what tinkering will be next or if I need another project car - but a manual cab would be nice.

Good to see thoughts on the topic that run along the same lines which prompted me to ask this question..and again, none of us are delusional or ridiculous, because the price is not what we expect to sell the car for, it's simply the price that we would consider to part with it. For me, there are probably no more than 5 other cars I would RATHER drive than the 968, and even used models of those are all over $ 75k. Add another $ 25k for expected maintenance in the following two or thee years after buying them and the INCENTIVE price for selling my 968 is $100k. Sure, I could buy another 968, have the entire engine and transmission essentially blueprinted/rebuilt, have the car completely stripped and then painted in a color that I want, ( I'm way too picky, may be only 3 colors I could live with..) have the interior redone, new suspension and upgrades matching what I have now, along with all my other mods, so on and so forth bringing the cost to what I guess would be approx $ 40k and another $ 15k for the

base car. So $ 55k , but that is still not an incentive price point to sell mine, it simply gives me some frame for the agreed value insurance policy I have on it , because most likely it is what I will do if this one is ever a total loss. ( reminder to self I should increase my current $35k limit to $55k on the policy at renewal this year) But as for selling the 968 - no compelling reason to part with it for less than $ 100k.

P.s. afoementioned cars are aDB9 , a Maranello 550 or 575 , a DB 7 and maybe an R8 ; the only used cars I would

rather drive, I do not have the slightest bit of interest in anything else. Newer ones would be limited to a VantageS and a maybe Maserati Grand Turismo, but I drove the latter and it still feels more like a sedan than a sports car. So does the DB9 for that matter, but talk about a car that would make me go to the garage every 15 minutes just to look at it...

Yep, nearly bought a Ferrari 575 Maranello in Titanium Silver with black and red interior this past spring... probably the only other true sporting car that I would exchange for my 968... then my wife (the level headed one!) said "Why don't you search out a really nice 968? You have not stopped whining about selling the first one!!!) The real decision maker was that I am a LARGE body type, and the Maranello is pretty tight for me. Actually the 968 is right at the border of "Too Small", but still room enough for me to breath, so that is the better choice, and I get to keep the remaining $80K in my pocket!

but, at this point, i don't have the garage space, and i'm not "done" with the 968 yet. the oil consumption problem is getting me closer though, and the transaxle rattle and rear suspension squeak continue to plague me. i love the car otherwise, but it needs another paint job too. to correct all of these things may run as much as $20k, and i'm just not sure i want to dump that into this car, nor am i sure i want to live with things the way they are. i may finally be nearing my breaking point.



not sure yet, and likely won't be making any decisions any time soon.



but if $50k walked in the door..................................

Certainly no less than 25K while offers like 35K would really make me think hard about letting it go. We're talking '92 Cab, which is a pretty decent car overall. I'd have to get enough to be able to replace it with a new toy. '93 Coupe I'd let go for much less (since it's technically the "extra" one) and I'd still make a profit but I've still got long term plans for that car. We'll see how I feel about that one when it's "done".
