Finnicky alarm
#1

A few nights ago I was awakened by the alarm going off in my car. I went out and turned it off and then on - seemed OK but not sure what set it off. Today it did it again and now, when I set it, the alarm shows two quick flashes rather than one quick flash. I assume that this is a trouble code. What sorts of things can a) set off the alarm (there was no wind or rain either time) and <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> cause this odd flashing sequence to appear? Are there any "user friendly" reset options?

The doors still lock properly but I now assume that the alarm is not operating.

probably a stuck pin switch, in either a door, or the glove box

get some contact cleaner and spray all the pin switches

My guess would be either the hood contact switch or the glove box one is broken/misadjusted. My hood one broke awhile ago and I just left it that way. It's a pretty fragile part that takes a beating from heat and hood closings. I believe your alarm should still work even with the double flash. Just try locking the car with a window down and then pull up the lock pin which should set off the alarm.

Are you talking about your coupe or cab? If it's the coupe, I'd check the right strut of the hatch.

There's a contact switch at the end of the strut. The switch is held in position by a sleeve that is tightened around the strut. If the sleeve gets loose over time, the strut can push the switch out of the way so the computer will think the hatch is still open.

It happened on my coupe, and the alarm went off in the middle of the night. Just loosen up the sleeve and reposition the switch so the strut fully deactivates the contact.

The 2 most likely culprits are the glovebox or under hood light. A quick test can be done to narrow it down. Unplug the under-hood light, close the hood and attempt to set the alarm. A slow flash indicates all check-points are O-K. If a fast flash is seen; plug in the hood light and then remove the glovebox bulb. Try to set the alarm again...

Basically this testing is simulating an open circuit. When the alarm senses a rise in current at any of the check-points it'll indicate the fault with a faster frequency flash. The alarm will still set, however the fast flash indicates one of the check-points didn't initialize correctly.

Thanks for the tips. It was the coupe. I did find that the glove box latch was loose (I have been using the plastic bags that Flash gave us at the 968 Celebration as a "special" garbage bag (who else has one like that?) and had it wrapped around the latch on the inside by one of the handles, dangling outside the glove box. It made the latch a bit loose. I took of the bag, reset the alarm and, so far, all is good. I will check the other points, though.

So two quick flashes of the LED light in the door lock is incorrect? Mine has always been that way. Of course, my alarm also has the problem of getting set off very easily.

I have an aftermarket alarm in the car (I am told) so I have just been locking the car using the key in the door and that seems to be working ok. No alarm issues yet.
