THE LAST SUPERCHARGER KIT - FOR SALE NOW
#1

i thought i would start a new thread, so that this conversation could have its own life

as 60 of you already know, the supercharger kit gives this car the power it should have had from the start, if porsche was able to get the turbo to pass emissions, and if the price point wasn't so high.  well, i took their lead, and made the kit.  it really brings the car to life.  reliability has  been great.  there are easily hundreds of thousands of miles on these kits now (probably over 1 million).  it doesn't add much in terms of maintenance complications either.  it really has proven to be the magic bullet for this car.   just ask anybody who has one what they think.  most of the guys won't say much, but rather just hand you the keys to see for yourself, as anything they could say just wouldn't cover it.  i think that's great.

ok - enough of that.

as many of you know, i am moving to ireland.  it looks like it will be mid-may.  that means i am busily packing things up in preparation.  this means that anything lying around loose is going to get packed up in a crate for the container very soon.  at that point, anything that would be shipped back here would be far more expensive.

so, a unique opportunity exists for somebody to get the last Design 1 Racing Super charger Kit, while the price is low.

$4995 gets you the Stage 1 kit, complete with CARB sticker, the Stage 3 Upgrade Kit, and an Exhaust Heat Shield.

that's 305 hp and 300 lb/ft for under $5k!!!

you can even use a credit card.

As an owner of an sc that I've used in my track car and now my garage queen, if you can tolerate a stupid shit eating grin every time you drive your car, buy one. If not, then just exist imagining what might have been.

What's the final price for these fence sitters?

No I don't work for Flash!!!

lol - personally i can't imagine owning one of these cars and not having it supercharged.  they are painfully slow without one.  even the i3 feels quick by comparison, and i think it is up to 40.  even our 5500 lb SUV is quicker to 60 than a normally aspirated 968.  sure, there is something to be said for driving an older car, but if it doesn't have to be slow, and the fun of driving it is driving it fast, why limit yourself?

Lol, let's not compare electric cars to a NA 968 ; that I3 is as quick as a 12 cyl Lamborghini Countach from 0-40, and a top end Tesla in "ludicrous mode" out-accelerates a Formila 1 car . So that's not a fair comparison, what is fair however is when the 968 , as much of a blast it is to drive, gets left behind by your average modern Honda nowadays ..that sucks. So to anyone out there, even if you don't care about being outrun by Hondas, know that the simple power / torque delivery of the D1R SC will transform your car into an entirely different and far more enjoyable driving experience vehicle . You'll regret not having grabbed the last SC out there before someone else buys it.

lol - fair enough.  my point though was the lackluster power of the stock 968 has always been a source of frustration to me.  it's not specifically 0-60, or 1/4 mile, or anything like that, but rather the complete inability to mash the pedal and have anything of note happen.  that problem goes away with the SC.  you can feel it in 6th gear on the freeway.  want to pass a car?  just step on the pedal.  no downshifting 2 hears, revving the piss out of the motor, and hoping to pass that guy ahead before he sees you and blocks you out.  it's just squeezing the throttle and powering through a corner, without having to worry so much about exact shift points to maximize power.  it's the improved drivability that really does it for me with the kit.  it just brings the car up into the modern era.  porsche would have done it (and had 305hp on the turbo s) if they could have gotten past the emissions issues, and if the price point wasn't so high.  they always had plans to do it.  the economics just didn't work.  there was just no way to get it done in that day and age.  fortunately now, you can have the car they always intended, for a fraction of what they would have charged for the upgrade.

who is going to be the lucky recipient?

Maybe a silly thought, why not have a lottery, $200 for 25 tickets to be sold, or $100 for 50 tickets.  Not sure if there is enough activity. And yes Bob, more work for you if you do it this way. This makes it a few months to sell all the tickets, and I am sure a few people with stricter budgets may do this, and know in the end they helped a fellow enthusiast get a great kit.

I have no problem "throwing" away $200 to get a chance to have another kit.

lol - interesting idea, but there isn't "a few months" for me to do that.  i really pretty much only have a few weeks, and then everything goes into the container and i won't see it for another 2 months.  at that point, there will be some pretty stiff shipping fees and such.

How would the SC kit perform with the RSBarn exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe, race kat and muffler? I also got the chip that goes with it. If I recall, there is a thread somewhere where you said the OEM manifold is best. More torque is always better, but I like my current setup too and am not liking the thought of swapping it back.

Also, the car has about 173.000 km's now, so I suppose a valve and head gasket job is in order too (and other stuff?) before the strain of the extra ponies do some damage? That being said/asked, the other day in Germany it ran 247+ (GPS measured) and was still wanting (a bit) more.

Not bad for a slow old car. No Honda's in sight neither ;-)

Lot's of questions...

the kit is not tuned for that open exhaust.  it would run very lean.  i tried it when i was first developing the kit, hoping for more power.  instead i got a horrible mess.  i was not able to tune it well enough for street use.  the problem is the cam overlap.  also, the kit must be used with the factory cat.  you lose a ton of low end torque without it, and it also makes it run lean.  lose-lose there on that one.

the kit comes with its own chip custom tuned for the kit.  over 20 maps were adjusted, and different injectors are used.

you're welcome to mess with it, but i did not have success, and in the end, removed the stahl header from my car and sold it.  the cat back works ok, but the muffler itself is a bit restrictive for the amount of power the kit puts out.

as for the head gasket and such, what i have been telling people is that there is no hard and fast rule about that.  if there is a weak spot, the added pressure will find it.  if it's fine, then it will be fine.  even if you blow the gasket, it only adds about an hour to the job.  the valve job necessity would be determined by a leak down test.

not long now before i will have to make a decision regarding the fate of this last kit.  once the movers are scheduled, the kit will disappear into a crate, and then into a container, not to be seen again for a long time.  i can and will do that, but it seems like a huge shame for somebody to lose out on the chance to get it while it's affordable.  because i will be buried with a lot of other stuff on the property, i won't get around to opening up that particular crate until probably about xmas time, and at that point, shipping is going to be ridiculous.

It's about time .. yay, one more person who'll experience what the rest of us SC'd folks have discovered - a 968 with the respectable power to match its super-car looks.

Too bad it'll be on a Tip though ...because now I lost my exclusivity being the only one who owns an SC'd tip . But still the only one who owns both an SC'd six speed and and SC'd Tip. ( D1R SCs that is , who knows if , and how many 968s out there in the wide world have other SCs on them.. )
