Engine Temp Gauge - Fluctuating

Thanks Flash.  I'll reach out to them for a quote.

Bad news. The Tiptronic warning light came back up again and the car stalled when I tried to shift the gear into Drive!!  So looks like the low ATF level wasn't the cause of the problem.  The gears shift perfectly fine when the Tip warning light doesn't come on, hence I'm ruling out the possibility that this is cause by a failed Tiptronic ECU though I could be wrong... Could it be an issue with the MAF sensor maybe?

If the voltage is dropping the tip light will come on, do you get an ABS warning light ?

The voltage regulator could be at fault they are the same as quite a few UK ford models and therefore cheap

1980's Granada springs to mind

The alternator and voltage regulator have both been checked by the specialist and was told they are in good working condition.  But he found that the cables connecting the alternator to starter is losing about 1-2 volts.  I now have the cables on order and hopefully replacing it will solve the problem.

Fingers crossed once again.

have you connected the car to a durametric or bosch hammer?

Yes, that is what fixed my bouncing guage

Yes had the car hooked up and there were 4 fault codes that showed up.

One was "Change of ignition timing" and the rest showed up as "Unknown DTC".

I will have the wiring harness replaced either today or tomorrow and will update on status!

hooked up to what

Unknown DTC the only one I have seen for that was a promax chip messing with the rev limiter

It was hooked up to a durametric.

Had the wiring harness replaced and voltage has improved.  It now reads 12.9V at the starter motor instead of 12V previously.   Still doing further monitoring to see if this has fixed the Tiptronic warning light issue - hasn't come on since and hopefully it won't.

The temperature gauge issue however persists - still bouncing randomly!  Gonna have the grounds behind the cluster cleaned (again) and pray that it will work this time.

There are 2 grounds in the drivers footwell, left side near the firewall. Have you checked those?

Checked the connectors of my temp sensor myself, it was definitely worth cleaning those.

Ok, so here's the latest update:

1.  Re bouncing/ consistently high temperature gauge (actual temp reading appears normal) - problem still persists after cleaning up all possible grounds and connectors (twice) and having temperature sending unit, water thermostat replaced.  I bought a used temp gauge and still getting the same problem.  What are the chances that both gauges are faulty?? But I'm inclined to think that this may be the case now.  Looks like I will have to get a new gauge after all...?

2. Tiptronic warning light - Looks to be an electrical voltage issue.  The light hasn't come back on ever since I had the wiring harness replaced which resulted in better voltage readings.

Chances that both gauges are faulty approaching 100%...

I gave up chasing that problem and now simply rely on the Tap the plastic repair...

Look for ELECT-19 on Clark's Garage. There you will find an easy procedure to test your gauges using an multimeter (Ohmmeter) and a €1,5 potentiometer.

I tried it out, it works like a charm. This way I figured out that my temp gauge is very accurate and that my oil pressure one is reading about 10% low.

If you hook up the gauge this way, and it stays at a constant level at various resistances, it might be just fine.

Was also looking at having the gauge repaired at North Hollywood Speedometers based in CA for half the cost of getting a new one. Has anyone used them before? Are they any good?

No personal experience, but they seem to be the gold standard.

Does anyone know whether a temp gauge from a late model 944 will fit our cars?  The part number for a 85.5 and later 944 model is 94464195304.  The part number listed for a 968 is 94464195307.  They appear to be the same, not sure why the part numbers are different though...

Reasonably sure they are not interchangeable.

FWIW, when I tested mine using the procedure from Clark's Garage, the resistances given for each mark on the gauge (apart from max and min) corresponded to a lower temperature reading on my 968* than those given by Clark's Garage (my girlfriend sat in the driver's seat and marked off the needle positions on the diagram, whilst I set the Clark's Garage resistances on the pot and said 'when' for each one).

Maybe the 968 gauge/sender is calibrated differently to the 944 version - can anyone confirm?

It might well be, as the fuel level gauge is different resistances
