Do You Use "Agreed Value" Insurance?
#21

Anyone have Leyland insurance through the PCA? I am quoting a policy with them and everything sounds cool, but she said the car has to be a "Pleasure Only" vehicle which is cool as it is, but then she said - "No Errands" - I said I might go out to get a gallon of milk and she said "NO ERRANDS!" in a much sterner voice..so does that mean if I have an accident and they find a gallon of milk in my car they won't pay out?

I was looking at them because they are cheaper than Hagerty's and the mileage allowance is double at 6,000 a year or you can get the unlimited mileage option..

Thanks,

Ed

I decided not get collision on my car, only liability....I pay $23/month or about $276/year through USAA....let's see, that means I would save about $325/year over a $600 policy, and there are no limits on driving it. Since I paid $9K for the car, I'm not too worried.

Paul, excellent choice there are some parts I will need when your car is totalled by hitting a squirrel (where is the sarcasm emoticon?).

Just got my renewal on Hagerty $662/year, 5,000 miles, yada, yada, yada...

Jay the leland quote is less than that for 6000 miles a year...maybe I have a better record since i have not gotten a speeding ticket in my 968 yet - lol

policies like that are very restrictive, and the companies are very good at finding ways not to pay claims. basically you have to prove you are going to or from an event. remember, insurance companies are not in the business of paying claims. they are in the business of finding ways to take your money and not pay claims.

do not get one of these policies as your only policy. they are great for additional coverage, so as to allow you to keep the car, rather than it be totaled, but as a standalone, they suck.

I know many people who have Hagerty and are happy with them. They blow off the mileage restrictions and drive all they want, but my concern with that is that if they have a 3000 mile a year rate and they drive say 5K a year, then have an accident, when the insurance company does the division on total mileage divided by years of coverage, they have the out not to pay out right there.

If I go with the agreed value insurance, I doubt I would want to keep the car if it is hit that badly that they would cut me a check for the agreed amount. I would most likely take the money and run - either to buy another car or whatever...

I have the car on my regular insurance plan that everything else is on right now but I would rather have 25K if the car is totaled instead of say 8K

yup - those restrictions are there for a reason. you can "cheat" all you want, right up to the point where you file a claim. then you're screwed

cheap insurance is exactly that

again, these kinds of policies are great as supplements, but as a stand alone policy the restrictions are a real problem, and the liability payout limits they have are too low for anybody in a major metropolitan area.

once i start driving the car again, i plan to add this kind of policy to my existing one. i'll probably state something around $50k

I will have to check to see if I can double up - but that doubles up the price too...

I was going to go $25K since I have about 15K in the car as of today.

I had to put my 968 on my regular Wawanesa insurance since Hagarty wouldn't insure it. You have to have a car 10 years old or newer for every driver in the household, and since I commute with a 1998 Civic, they said I don't count even though my wife's car is a 2011.

Funny thing was Wawanesa turned out to be cheaper than most I looked up. They are always, always the cheapest for my families regular cars but who knew they would be for the 968.

Leyland is the cheapest I have found...I have plenty of cars - two newer 2007, the 968 and a volvo being restored..also a couple of bikes and since I am retired, I don't commute anywhere - lol

Hagerty waived the 10 year requirement for my car (I drive a 2002 Volvo S40). They asked what I would do if my car broke down, driving the 968 was not one of the options I mentioned.

Flash is generally right (Hagerty has an excellent reputation for paying out), ...you should have a general liability umbrella if you have anything of value that can be taken. My wife and I are very conservative and carry a massive umbrella policy.

I have my car insured with American collector. I pay $137 per YEAR! I am allowed 5000 miles per year, I can only use it for pleasure ( not to work) and it has to be garaged to get that rate. I have my 86 911 on the policy and I pay another $130 for it per year, I have agreed value of 7500 on the 968 and 19500 on the 911. If someone hits you agreed value means nothing, it's only what they pay if you total it.

My 911 was hit from behind two weeks ago, not my fault, and American collector has been very easy to deal with...already being paid to fix it.

yes, but what are your liability limits? i can't get more than $300k with any of the collector carriers.

for me, that's way too low. but, i can add it to my regular policies, and have the piece of mind of being paid out a reasonable amount for the car, rather than have them total it for a fender bender

where does the umbrella pick up? i would have had to adjust our policies to cover a $200k gap. i also would have lost the multi-car discount, as well as had to deal with multiple drivers on 2 policies. in the end, it would actually have cost me more.

but still great as a supplement

I don't really know, It is a $1,000,000 liability policy so If I do something stupid I'm covered...I suppose I should look at it to see what is covered. I bought it when I got roped into using my truck and trailer in my church's Christmas Parade and then just left it thinking it was a good idea to have with as much towing and hauling of vehicles as I do.

The whole "only for pleasure" issue with collector car insurance always confused me. I ask one of the agents once what exactly that meant and was told the same thing as most "no commute to work, no errands" and was also told that the only drives that would qualify were, and I specifically quote here, "drives that do not have a specific destination"

I always chuckle when I think about that. I don't know about the rest of you but I always have a destination, even if it's just a fun drive in general and that is back home.

you can bet that if they are putting up such restrictions at the onset, they will never pay on a claim that you cannot prove definitively was not subject to such a restriction. the burden of proof will be upon you, not them
