Cracked Balance Shaft Housing
#1

I have a significant oil leak coming from a crack in the lower balance shaft cover/housing of my 94' 968 with 87k miles.  Apparently, this is not a part which can be purchased and replaced.  Two Porsche mechanics (different shops) which are familiar with these engines say they have never seen this, so they are not sure of the cause or how to proceed.  I have been unable to uncover any discussion of the issue so far.

Any thoughts or experience with this dilemma are much appreciated.  Thanks.

I had this occur on my track car last year. I had a new race engine installed. While the cause was never determined, the bolts are supposed to be torqued in some sort of order. Did you recently have any belt work done?

I'd like to see a picture if possible. Just curios where exactly it is located.

PS pump was replaced twice in the last 6 months (and PS belt). It's possible someone over torqued the cover trying to resolve a leak, but I will never know for sure since I have only owned the car for 1 year.  Crack is near the front of the cover.

I'm just interested in a fix at this point.

Perhaps glue it with a kind loctite..

They might have cracked the housing by overtorqing the bolts to stop the leak.

Stopping the leak overthere is not possible by overtorqing because the o-ring is old and crumpy.

We had some concern the pump wasn’t straight when it went in which contributed to the housing crack. Take it out.
