I spoke too soon ! Yesterday , on a hot day , I made two long drives ( about an hour each ) and two short drives ( about 15 minutes each ). During, and at the end of all of them the fans worked perfectly . And then today ...back to the same high speed repetitive short cycles . WTF ?! How can it be made to work just fine for a day and then the next day it reverts to the old m.o. ?!

Sorry to hear. 

 

Clearly it's something with the resistors. Maybe one of the contacts is loose or has a kink? Would suggest focusing all your attention there - pull the leads, clean again, maybe actually crimp them onto the spades with needle nose pliers.

It was the thingamajiggy at the end of one of the wires which slides on the thingamajig that comes out of the resistors. THAT was loose , so I just pressed it a bit with pliers and now that it stays firmly on, the fans are once again back to normal operating mode . In other words, ( using pdxmike terminology ) I believe what I actually did was crimp one of the leads on the spade .

I have an "issue" with mine that I've ignored as long as I've owned the car - fan relay click-click-clicks as the low speed fan comes on - not really a problem as it only lasts three-five seconds and the fans otherwise work totally fine. I've done the basic tests and tried a different relay and everything has seemed fine, but the clicky relay issue has persisted. So now you've got me thinking that I need to take a second look at the resistors and tighten things up a bit in there. Another example of how all altruism ultimately ends up being self-interest

Could someone tell me the part number of the dual temperature sensor that screws into the radiator (has 3 male spade pins) and if you happen to know what page of the PET diagram for the 968?  I can't seem to find it. Look at radiator diagram and can't seem to find it.   My lower temp sensor doesn't seem to be working, only the high temp sensor.

And use a torque wrench, the setting is surprisingly low. I am running the lower temp Vanagon unit, and I like that the engine doesn't run too hot, even in summer with the AC on.

28nm if you have a brass insert in the radiator, more likely yours is plastic, so 20nm. If you have any other torque questions look at Clark's garage online. Lots of helpful information on there.
