Coolant leak
#1

So I have (now had) a leak from the radiator. It was at the top, passenger's side, looking down about 2 inches from the top. It was a nipple in the rad obviously meant to attach a hose to somewhere that was going nowhere - it just had a dead-end. The clamp had cut though the dead-end hose on it and it was leaking periodically but when it did it was a flood. Should this be attached to something? Or is the rad also for 944 turbo and the extra port was to cool the turbo? Sorry for the poor quality pic - had to use my cell phone in the garage.

Ohh - I know this one <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> That's the transmission fluid warmer chamber for a tip. If you have a 6-speed there should be nothing in there - and if there is you have a problem.

Man I hope I got that right - I never know any of these mechanical questions.

Here is a picture of mine. No hose no nipple no coolant.

FWIW My leak turned out to be the temp switch on the driver's side.

Man, Kim you have some serious issues going on up there - must be the salt and gravel they use on the roads in the winter! [Image: smile.gif]

So the difference between mine and yours, Rxter, is that I had a cover over the extra nipple and yours had no cover (ie permanently blocked). Perhaps I have rad for a tip in my car which is a 6-speed. RS Barn did the install so I presume that they recognised that when it was installed.

Maybe the early cars had the nipple as mine is a 92 and has one and rxter has a 94 with none.

My 92 has a 1-1/4" section of pipe that is blocked where ti meets the radiator, exactly like rxter's. No hose, though, since nothing could out of the pipe due to the block. It's just like a garbage disposal, which comes with a block-off plate that you have to break off before attaching the hose to the dishwasher. It looks like maybe all radiators came like this, and Tips get their bock-off plated broken at the factory, and of course get the hose to the transmission attached.

So the plastic chamber has fluid in it regardless and the difference between manual and tip is whether the block out is broken? If so Kim looks like you just need to put a new piece of hose and a clamp on there and it should hold for another bazillion kM.

That's how it looks to me, but I could be mistaken...

indeed. But the last hose lasted only 10K km, which is but a small fraction of a bazillion km. Although I might not personally live long enough to pass a bazillion, I feel certain that the chances are good for another 10K km.

I also noted, while looking for the leak, that I have what seems to be a lot of belt dust accumulated on surfaces near the serpentine belt. Is some belt wear normal? My car has only about 15K km on all new belts. I will try to snap a pic in a couple of days. But it is enough that you can scoop it up with your finger.

Perhaps, if the original clamp cut into the hose and contributed to the leak, you might consider something like a T-bolt clamp instead. McMaster Carr is usually a good place to see different styles of hardware. These ones are 3/4" wide so they provide a wider seal as well. I used them on the coolant hoses of my Farmall tractors with good results, but that is a thermo-siphon system (no pump). They're stainless so they looked snazzy and didn't corrode.

I think the right side tank nipple in the photo is part of all 2V and 4V tanks--it's used in 2V motors and blocked off in 4V motors, either by a cap or cast in to the tank.

Tiptronics use a cooler in the right side tank in addition to the left front end cooler, but the in tank cooler is mounted through the plastic with two threaded couplers, one above the nipple in question and the other above the nipple that mounts the hose to the water pump.

I've not seen a tiptronic radiator in a manual transmission car. YMMV, of course.
