Coolant leak
#1

Question from an anonymous member...

Hi there, Hope you have been well. I have a coolant issue I was hoping you might have a quick answer for.

I had to start driving the car as the tranny in my silverado crapped out. It's been nearly a week and the last few nights after I get home there is coolant on the floor. The first time it was like dish soap or detergent. Now, tonight it just looks like coolant and it is dripping somewhere from the front, running down to the inside of the front fender, and coming out in front of the front tire. The overflow tank for the coolant is down about 50%, but it is still there. There is some drip stains down the front of it. The car is not running hot, the temp gauge is totally running in the middle and the car seems to act fine. I was wondering if it was just a bad leaky coolant cap or do I have something more serious.

I would appreciate any insight you might have

Start with the cap. I drove around for two years with a gallon of coolant, occasional hot running, fluid loss until a gal I know suggested a cap.

Fixed.

Also, keep a close eye on your oil for coolant contamination. (Milkshake)

Check the tip of the overflow hose, if it’s wet , then start with the radiator cap .   As soon as you park the car, try to see if you can detect where the coolant leaks from ; check the radiator frame for any wetness.   Look under the car right away after stopping the engine: if you see coolant dripping from what seems to be a little further back ( middle part of the engine almost ), that might not be very good news...possibly the water pump is shot .  Let’s hope it’s something simple like a radiator cap !
