coolant leak ?
#1

Already talked to Bob about this in the morning, I just finished checking all that was suggested, everything appears to be bone dry... yet, twice this week there was a 1" diameter spot of coolant on the garage floor.

The spot is on the driver's side, little more than a foot inside of the wheel and approximately in line with the back the wheel... to put the location in some perspective... To the naked eye, and to the touch ( as far as I could get either my hand and a metal rod with a rag tied to the tip in all the nooks and crannies I could access ) no wet spot was detected. ( hold the wet spot jokes please )

The belly pan is as dry as it gets. The front, under the radiator and hoses is visible, and while the back is obscured, I could see enough of it and reach above to feel around that it was also very dry.

Immediate thought went to the overflow hose. No obstruction in the hose at all

and the tip was just slightly wet, so it could very well be that on two separate occasions there is a bit of overflow, but WHY ? , considering this never happened in the near two years I had the car, and the fluid level in the reservoir stays exactly at the demarcation line - I don't overfill, don't underfill, driving habits are the same, outside temperatures are pretty consistent...

1) Where else could a leak come from ( in that mid to back of the engine, driver side area ) without hitting the belly pan, or perhaps just small enough to dry very quikcly... except on the garage floor ?

2) what could suddenly cause overflow, twice in the same week if that's what it is ?

I may be making a mountain out of a mole hill here, but hesitate to drive it 400 miles to SoCal in two weeks and break down somewhere where I'll clearly have no cell signal and the nearest Porsche mechanic is 200 miles in either direction ?

bleed your system - if you have air in there, wierd stuff like that can happen

call me if you need to know the procedure

Dan, have you checked the waterpump area, specifically the bleed hole near the bottom. I've seen a few fail like this and leave little to no signs save for the spot. AF evaps pretty quickly on a hot engine.

Best bet is to drive 20 min. then hang out under the car in the garage until you discover source of leak.

FYI, outer belt cover must come off to inspect wasserpump.

Good Luck!

Skip,

I tried the drive and wait test, but only waited for less than a minute after turning off the engine, so may be on Saturday after a 20 min + drive I'll "hang around" under the car with a bit more patience and see if I can detect the source.

Flash,

If it turns out to be the overflow, I'll bleed the system ( I recall there was a comprehensive post with instructions on this, so I'll try to bring it up - if not, I'll call you for directions )

thanks

drove the car to put in 5 gals. of 100 octane, drove it back like a bat out of h**l, total of about 30 min, and then as soon as I shut off the engine I waited for the coolant to escape from somewhere..and waited, and waited.. and kept looking under the pump area to see if anything might drip into the pan, or near the radiator and hoses, checked the overflow hose every 1 or 2 minutes, back to

belly pans viewing, wiping, touching for anything wet, listening if I can hear any leaks... NADA. 45 min hour later now, and no sign of coolant anywhere.

If it was the pump, the seepage would happen within the first couple of minutes after the engine shut off, right ? And same for the overflow hose I suppose ?

So I'll wait until tomorrow morning and if there is no coolant on my garage floor, I'll just mark this one off as another gremlin.
