Control Arm Rear Mount
#1

Was having a knocking noise on the front passenger's side that I could not find. Sway bar mounts were fine as well as ball joint, tie rod end and strut mounts. Finally found it. My control arm rear mount was not working properly. When I was jacking up the car on the passenger's side, the mount made a popping sound as the control arm turned when the weight was taken off of it. Installed new mount and no more knocking. The mount did not look bad but apparently it was giving up. Just thought I would pass this on just in case anyone else has a strange knocking noise that they can not find

the early style castor blocks (which is what i think you are referring to) are known to fail - the replacement part is of better design and is sturdier - you can tell the difference by the construction - the early one is a cast piece with rubber that is in 3 connecting webs - the replacement part is steel and has more rubber

you will need an alignment after replacing it, and it is probably a good idea to change both of them at the same time

it is definitely a good idea to replace both at the same time. i went one at a time since i couldn't get enough torque on the passengers side with those lines blocking my wrench. anyways, with one updated and one old block the car acted kinda squirrelly.

My car had the updated mounts on both sides but they both look worn. I have the replacement for the other side and plan to replace it shortly. I am also taking it to the alignment shop soon but I have to replace the bent tie rod first. Always something more to do.
