Compromise tire for DE and autoX?
#1

What tires work well for both DE and autoX - i.e., warm up quickly and maintain grip on track? My track car is a 1989 944 Turbo with 16" rims.

Racing slicks are the best, but they are not in my plan (or budget) as I have no spare storage space/trailer and drive to the track. I love Kumho Victoracers V700s for autoX as they warm up instantly and stick like glue. Unfortunately, they got all mushy and lost grip after just two DE days. I kept tire pressure constant, so it seems like the tires just don't like the track day heat cycles.

What do you guys use for DE or autoX? Any thoughts on a good comporomise for both events?

Avon Tech RAs are very good for both, and tend to last. They're not exactly slicks, as they have two channels in them. You should be seeing better wear out of the Victos.

Andre -- how many heat cycles did you have before the DE? I ask because I wonder if it the number of heat cycles and not the track day itself that killed the tires. I was planning on using the Kuhmos on the track. Now I'll think about it. Thanks.

Just drive slower and you won't have any problems. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

It is hard to beat a Toyo RA-1 for a do everything tire.

Thanks, I will definitely check out the Toyos!

My Victoracers did have two autoX days and ~500mi street driving prior to the DE, so they had a few cycles on them already. Erik, you are right - I probably overdrove tires in corners at Lime Rock, back on gas too soon...

Another option now from Toyo is the R888 tire that has been available overseas for some time. It is listed with specs. on the Toyo website, so I assume it would be available at dealers now or at least soon. It comes in standard sizes for 968 wheels, is claimed to have as good ro beter performance as RA-1's, and is UTOG rated for 100 wear. I'd be interested to try a set for my next track tires.

Cheers,

Thanks for the advice! Toyos for this season- it's decided. It seems that Tirerack.com doesn't carry Toyos. Does anyone know a good source for them on-line?
