Collectibility and Value - Shipped vs Delivered
#21

getting back to the original point, i've seen more than a few cars that had some minor items installed by the dealer, that were not on the build sheet, but are OEM parts, installed exactly the same as if it were done in germany, and in fact the original buyer was not informed otherwise. these are things like crested center caps, 17" wheels, rootwood shifter and brake handle, etc

does that make the car less valuable? is it not "original"?

personally, there are some things i would rather have the dealer install than the factory. i can get a better deal, with no down side.

since the database is so full of errors and omissions, as they all are, who is really to say what was or was not done where and when anyway?

I get the feeling that since these cars will never be seen as high-value collector cars, it won't make a difference to many (if not most) potential buyers if it was done at the factory or at the dealership. However, for the one or two very very obsessive collectors out there, perhaps.

For example, my car has a Porsche branded CD changer in the trunk. I don't really know if it was installed by the factory or the dealer, and to be honest, I don't really care. That's not why I bought the car (not to mention that I didn't have a whole lot of choices available). The factory speakers and head unit are long since gone, and that doesn't really bother me much either.

However, maybe if the previous owner or dealership even had changed the color of the car.... that might bother me more.

For a truly collectable original most certainly will drive the highest price. Not sure that the 968 will ever be collectable. What brings the most value today is low mileage, good service records and a clean title, just like any used car. I don't think that originality has much effect at this point. In 30-years who knows?

the question is "what is original?"

for example, if the item is installed by the dealer, is EXACTLY the same part, with EXACTLY the same result, and you CANNOT tell where it was installed or by whom, and it was installed prior to delivery to the original owner, is it not "original"?

by the way, in concours and racing, the answer is "yes. it is original"

Well existentially, if it can't be known, it doesn't matter...
