Clunk from the Front Right Wheel
#1

I have a clunk coming from the front right wheel. It occurs when I come out of a driveway a little on a high side or go over a bump in the road. I have taken the wheel off and tighten everything I can get a wrench on. I have replaced the wheel bearings, but still get the clunk! Any thought?

Thanks

Steve

Have you replaced caster blocks? Back of the A Arm rubber bushings tend to degrade over time...they are often overlooked and frequently the source of many front steering issues.

Sway Bar bushing? Does it do it when you turn, as in a three point turn?

would struts bottoming out cause such a noise?

I think Jay got it.

I had a similar problem, turned out to be castor blocks.

Along with castor blocks and sway bar bushings, check upper strut mounts.

probably sway bar bushing - very common - leaks do that very quickly to that bushing

steve - are you coming to the paso robles run?

Hi All

I also have a clunk in the right front, It only happens under hard left-hand turns as the right front loads. A lesser clunk as the suspension unloads. My second DE at GRATTAN raceway in Michigan showed this problem. The Castor blocks were replaced two hundred miles ago, It really acts like a binding issue. The sway bar has the Flash set-up with the centering collars, delrin bushings and grease grooves. I notice that the shock bump stop has degraded and is mostly missing, could this be a issue? Does anyone have a procedure to check the lower ball joint? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

How old are the struts?? Missing bump-stops is not a good sign.

Struts are new, Koni sports with H & R progressive springs, I just used the old stops, Now I wish I had replaced them. Will the suspension compress to the point of a fully compressed shock or spring coil?

Pretty sure thats why they have bump-stops. When I pulled my struts out, the stops were all there, but you could tell they had changed from the new feel.

Hi Flash,

What Paso run? Sorry I was out of town for a while there and didn't see any posts for some reason.

When the clunk happens I am at parking lot speeds, coming out of a driveway of going over those (expletive deleted) speed bumps. I am guessing that one or the other bushing is to blame since I don't think I am even close to the end travel of the strut. I could be wrong. I will let you guys know.

I will check but I don't think it has ever been taken apart.

BTW, I just bought a new German canvas top from GAHH! Now I have to figure out how to put it on. There was a post from a member that was going to try this himself. Can you point me to that again?

Cheers

I'll check tonight, I think I assembled it according to some pictures on this forum. When I assembled it, the bar could pivot within the holder. I'll also check the attachment point at the A arm, maybe something is loose or just plain wrong.. Thanks PS Any method or words of wisdom on checking the lower ball joint, The A arm is original and the car has 90K miles.

Well I checked out the sway-bar movement by loading and unloading the A arms with a jack. The bushings at the center mounts seem OK, however on the right side at the drop link there is a binding issue. The drop loop around the delrin bushing is not sliding in and out as the A arm moves up and down. It appears to bind, which forces the center mount forward almost to the power steering pump. At some point the drop link releases and the sway-bar snaps back causing the clunk. To a lesser degree when the A arm moves down. After doing a search on sway-bars I believe that when I installed the new bar I never preloaded the suspension before attaching and tightening the Bar components. I will redo tonight. One last thing , on my search, with the delrin center bushings, several comments were made as to the position of the drop bracket being between the two tabs of the bushing bracket. This is the way mine is, the bar rotates nicely without undo slop, Is this correct, Flash commented that the tabs should not have anything between them? A post started 7/6/06 has several comments the stating something should be mounted between the tabs (The hanging bracket) Post #9 has even you Flash, mounting between the tabs, has this changed? I just need to be sure before I reinstall things. Thanks again all.

if the bushings are delrin, there should be no preload

i may have mispoken, and was referring to the extra braces

as for the vertical support being between the tabs, it's been so long since i saw another one, that i frankly can't remember - i do know that neither the tarret nor kla braces should be between the tabs - that causes play in the bushing - it should be very easy to tell what is correct though - when you compress the tabs around the bushing, there should be no play whatsoever

please send me a link to the above mentioned post - i need to check that out and potentially correct it
