Check Engine light coming on
#1

Last Sunday and today, my check engine light has been coming on every time I accelerate. It's when I press the gas pedal down a little heavier than usual (not too much). I thought it only did it when the car is stopped and I accelerate but it did it again today on the highway when I was passing this car (I was going 70 and accelerated). It's only on for a few seconds and then it turns off, but it's always when I accelerate. Any idea what kind of trouble I'm facing here? Thank you.

I'm sorry I didn't realize I posted this on the wrong section of the board... there's no noise here. I hope someone moves this.

first thing - STOP DRIVING!!!!!

second - check your oil level

third, if that does not show the problem, perform a "blink test" to determine what is triggering the light - the procedure is pinned at the top of this section

fourth, the thread has been moved to this section - no worries

O2 sensor? - could be loose - could be dying - it's screwed into the exhaust pipe, just forward of the catalytic converter

perhaps dirty MAF or bad connector at the MAF

those are the only things i can think of that would be "oxygen related"

hmmmm what needs to be done in order to fix this? and is this a bad problem if this dies?
and what is MAF?

if it's the O2 sensor, try tightening it - if that doesn't fix it, it may need replacing - fairly easy fix and not expensive

if it's the MAF, first check and clean the connector - if that doesn't fix it, then clean the MAF with MAF cleaner - do not touch the wire inside - do not use other cleaners

if those simple things don't fix it, RS Barn is near you - i would contact him

I had the same code a few years ago.

Cleaned my MAF, reset the ECU and that fixed my problem.

Flash, Is that MAF cleaner stuff something you buy at NAPA or Autozone? I think I read somewhere that it comes in a can and you just spray the wire with it. yes/no?

i got it at either kragen or pep boys, so i guess, yeah

yes, after removing the MAF from the car, just spray the wire with it - let it dry FULLY before reinstalling and turning on the ignition

ok a friend of mine picked up a MAF cleaner and we should clean it tomorrow. I took my MAF out of the car and it looked pretty dirty in there. Ever since I put it back the light never came back on but we never know. I will clean it anyway cause the code still comes up with that test. I will let you know.
Thanks a lot to all of you with your fast responses and help, especially flash.
