castor block install
#1

The passenger side caster block has been eaten away by the p/s fluid. I want to put some upgraded blocks on now. I was going to wait till I get new struts, but the current blocks seem like a safety issue. Can I just disconnect the struts and bolt on the new ones, or will I have to tear down more of the front the suspension to get them mounted.

R&R the struts does not involve the caster blocks at all, so you can do the two jobs separately, however, messing with either requires an alignment after the job is done so doing both at the same time makes sense.

greimann i owe you a beer

I was thinking that disconnecting the strut would free up the movment in the arm so i could get the blocks in easily. If I dont need to do that than the whole job will be even quicker, I plan on going with the elepant racing "Weather-Sealed Monoballs" which should put up with p/s leak, till that gets worked out. For now, I don't want to replace the front rubber bushings because they look fine. If I have to get an alignment I will get a strut brace which should be fun.

Note that I said strut replacement does not require fiddling with caster blocks. Caster block replacement my indeed be simpler if the strut were disconnected, but probably not necessary.

i'm interested in these blocks, but need to do some more homework first - that's a spot where i'm not sure a spherical bearing can handle the load and stay quiet - there are different grades of bearings out there, and depending on which one they use, it could have a little slop, which would be noisy, or it could be tight, and it might stay that way

let us know what you find out

I ordered the Elephant racing blocks, I'm going to stick with the rubber bushings on the front of the control arm and see how I like it.

I got my elepant racing blocks today, hopefully I will get them in this weekend with a short shift kit in addition. The new blocks are very nice, the movement is very smooth and the seals look like they should hold for a while unless they get torn. I'll tell you guys how it goes...

ill take a few pics
