camshaft timing and setup
#1

I'm a little confused about the camshaft timing and setup. The workshop manual, page 15-12, says to rotate the crank until 45 deg before TDC on cy1. Then align te casting marks with the camshaft chain links. Has anyone followed this proceedure? Or did you just find TDC on te flywheel and then place the camshafts at the orientation as shown on page 15-9, which seems to align with my casting marks. I'm a little nervous about this final timing since these are no-clearance engines.

When I did my WP, I just set all marks at TDC and it worked fine.

That's what I thought, but I wanted to be sure.

Mefford, it sounds like you are reading from the camshaft reinstallation section (don't have mine handy to check). What are you trying to do, just reinstall belts (use TDC) or are you trying to reinstall some cams? What you read above is refering to two marked links on the cam chain that are aligned to the casting marks on the camshafts themselves.

If trying to reinstall cams you can do it at TDC as well. I believe the manual says to do if 45 degrees before TDC because the cams slide in easier without having to balance the lobes on the valves. If you do it at TDC, it takes a bit more finess (especially when struggling with the variocam unit) but works fine. Also, make sure to follow the procedure of tightening so that they go in as smooth as possible.

Good luck with whatever you're up against.

Hey Russ,

I've been rebuilding my head. I'm at the point of re-installing the cams. So I wanted to make sure about the cam timing. The 45 deg thing through me off, but I'll sure your right about the installation without the lobes intersecting the valves.

I have the cam installed now and getting ready to install the timing belt.
