Cams, chains and pads......
#21

The confusion is unclear. What is clear is that the pads are the same, and that you cannot change both pads without removing the camshafts.

The confusion lies in why I have heard so many fellow 968ers say that the dealership has told them that they can not obtain the lower pad without ordering the complete tensioning unit. If the bottom pads were the same as the top pad, why would the parts salesmen tell customers this? Also, one dealership told me that the 928 pad was the original equipment for the bottom pad. I just don't understand why the dealers are not speaking with unanimity. Although I would like to say, "Yes, the mystery is solved, both of my pads were the same when I pulled my tensioning unit (last night, in fact). However, with 89,000 miles on my engine, there is a possibility that my pads have been replaced before.

You are right, it is an unequivocal that the camshafts have to be removed in order to change the lower pad. Also, it is clear that one can use the upper pads for both the upper and lower slots without incident. What is unclear, for me, at least, is whether or not our cars left the factory with the same upper and lower pads or different ones. Although it is not worth losing sleep over, since we know that the upper pad works fine in both slots, I still prefer to replace parts with the correct part number if possible.

I have a friend who has a 5000 mile engine. Whenever he has his pads changed, I am going to see whether or not his pads are both upper pads. If so, the fog will be lifted.

Apparently, there's not enough difference between the upper and lower pads to make a difference since Sunset sells two uppers for jobs. Say they've not had complaints but salesman wasn't positive that was right and they do not sell the lower pad separate from the whole cam tensioner (about $800). I've ordered two 968 uppers as people have suggested (and used successfully) and the other Part number for the lower pad that was listed in this forum in another place. Sunset said that part number was for the 928....so, when they all arrive, I'll do a caliber inspection and see if I can detect any differences.

[quote name='NeedPorscheSpeed' date='Apr 15 2005, 03:39 AM']Apex, if you installed two upper pads, that should be just fine. Actually, I am back to a state of confusion concerning the pad issue. See post #7 in this thread:

Excellent. I look forward to seeing the results of your caliber test.

Also, I must have missed something, Harvey. At one point, after you had inspected your pads and chain, I thought that you had decided not to go any further. What changed your mind?

When the order arrives from Sunset with the new chain, I'll carefully compare the new to the old and see if I change the chain now or later. Hearing the story about stripping cheesehead bolts and how easy it is too do didn't build my confidence. I have a set of cheeseheads on order. But the info on how to minimize bolt breakage that I've read sounds reasonable. Jury is still out on whether I change the cam chair right away or not but I'll be ready either way.

Harvey, I recall reading that Pelican Parts carries the Heavy Duty chain. Does Sunset carry it also?

As I understand it, the original chain in PET was superceded by the heavy duty chain. Therefore, Sunset does, in fact, carry the heavy duty chain.

Sunset didn't say anything about a heavy duty chain...I just ordered. Some of the parts are ordered from Germany and it may be that they're holding my whole order to ship at once. On well....I don't have much time to work on it in the next couple of weeks anyway.

Oh boy... how long ago did you place your order? I plan to order some pads and other items from Sunset tomorrow. I had hoped to have all of the parts here by Saturday, April 30th. That was my target date for completing the job. By the sound of your post, that might not be happening...

Need - if you really "need", I have a brand new chain and pads that I purchased from Sunset late last year for the time that I undertake this job. If you'd like, I'd send them to you and you can replace them for me when your order comes in.

Thanks very much for the offer. I really appreciate it. I will keep you posted.

(Note: On the "Need" for Porsche speed front, thankfully, my 1989 Turbo is fulfilling that particular "need." )

If you want quick response (unless they have the parts in stock and promise to ship right away), I'd consider ordering from Paragon or someone. Pargon's order went in a week or so after the Sunset order and it's already here...last week! Now..that said...I don't know if they sell genuine Porsche parts like Sunset or not?

Makes sense, but as I recall someone stating, Pelican offers both chains and refers to one as "Heavy Duty". Interesting why they would offer both.

I have heard nothing but good things about Pargon's shipping speed. Also, it seems that the vast majority of the items they stock is OEM, actually. In my case, I placed an order today with Sunset for several dealer-only items. The XZN bolt that I am replacing (all 20, although I only stripped 5) was the only item that they didn't have in stock. They were 5 days out, but Jeff said he would do everything he could so that my order would arrive in time for my target date of April 29th.
