basic questions I never thought to ask about radiator flushing
#1

While my car is down because of an electrical connector I broke I thought I would do some other deferred maintenance and I went about flushing the radiator. Now I realize I don't understand something.

If you drain the radiator (using the lower radiator hose) and the thermostat is closed (as it would be) then doesn't the coolant remain in the block behind the thermostat? Of course it's not a perfect seal so it will trickle out but if you just pop the hose back on after the flood then you've left the coolant behind.

And if you drain the block then you're counting on the water pump to start up promptly to refill the block, is this the "vapor lock" we used to hear about.

I've never thought about this before, if I'm being an idiot kindly be nice about saying it. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

That's actually not a dumb question, and it has always bugged me that Porsche didn't see fit to install a drain plug in our cars' engine blocks (although there are rumors that a few did actually come with one - mine definitely doesn't). Somebody who understands this beter than I do please chime in, but it seems that unless you go to the hassle of removing the thermostat, there's no way to get all the coolant out of the block. And even if you remove the thermotat, you'd still have to flush the system to get the old coolant out, and then, unless you have a pressurized DI water supply line, you're stuck with leaving some tap water in your block. Am I looking at this wrong? Thanks.

I'd like to give this question a bump as I am about to flush my system as well.
