Looking for General Tune-up advice
#1

I have purchased a 968 cab with low miles in good shape, with complete records, but I still like to do my own maint. so I know where everything sits. Here is the list I have thus far, please feel free to add or make manufacturer recommendations.

Cap (Bosch)

Rotor (Bosch)

Plug Wires (RS Barn - Magnecor KV85's)

Plugs (Bosch WR-7-DC Copper plugs)

Oil Filter (Mahle)

Air Filter (Mahle)

Fuel Filter (Mahle)

HCV (Napa Brand)

DME (933 style....coming from Paragon)

Oil (20W50....castrol GTX Dino oil is all I can find.....how does anyone feel about Rotella T6 5w-40 full synthetic?)

Clean MAF (cleaned many a MAF in my day....but this one has a core value of $250?!? Is there anything special about the cleaning process?)

Of course, my belts, tensioner, and rollers are all being replaced. The hoses all appear to be in good shape, I have yet to check for any vac. leaks....as I suspect either that or a bad cap/rotor being the root cause of my slight variation in my idle.....no stumbling....just a noticable +/- ~30 rpm while watching the tach.

wires - make sure they have the right connector on them. i've seen the wrong one on some magnacores. not sure what that is about.

plugs - the bosch copper is the cheapest, but the lowest in performance and life. platinum lasts longer. ngk iridium makes more power.

air filter - the airbox mod is very popular, free power, and the K&N filter lasts essentially forever at a lower cost.

oil - touchy subject. lots of opinions. even mine just changed. i am switching to amsoil for reason of higher temp capability. dino oil does not provide the best lifespan for the engine.

MAF - nothing special. just make sure you use MAF cleaner only. (CRC makes a good one)

have fun

Is this ignition coil worth replacing?

Are the iridium plugs the foundation for good power, or is there an actual hp gain to be seen from just this upgrade?

nobody i know has ever tested it on this car to see what the power gains are, but i can feel a response improvement, and definitely smoother running up top. on other cars they have been shown to make a hp or two at peak.

as for the coil, hotter spark is better, but again, no testing done on this car

I bought a TON of tune-up and general maint. parts last night, so I am gonna hold off on anything else until I get the new belts on, and get all of my tune-up parts installed......but thanks to flash I ended up spending the extra $20 for the NGK iridium plugs and $30 for the K&N...... and my airbox definitely has a date with a hole saw before the weekend is done!......so flash, you can paypal me that $50 whenever you get a chance!

RSbarn no longer sells the Magnacore KV85's.....so I ended up adding a set of performance 8mm wires and hood struts on my existing order from paragon-products....pretty sure Jason cut me a deal as there was no additional shipping for any of it! I absolutely love finding parts dealers who appreciate when their customers want to spend more! I hope he knows that the $5 he ate will ensure that I will be buying many more parts from him in the future!.....probably have him shipping me a coil in a week

lol - yeah - that's great - i suppose i could deduct that from what i should charge for all the time spent developing the mod with dave, and then paid for the dyno time for all the testing, and then send you a bill for the balance

seriously though - make sure you get the right size hole saw to go with the rings that need to go at the entries. they aren't just there for looks. the right ones actually help prevent turbulence. square edges are bad. curved edges are good.

I always cringe slightly when I read about the airbox mod as I am very skeptical of it. I have posted on this in the past and it may not need redux but...

A mod like this cannot be tested on a dyno IMO as the air moving over the car is a large factor in tuning the airflow to the airbox. You are disconnecting the airbox from the front of the car, where you find a high pressure area of cool air, and connecting it to an area that I associate with hot air often under low pressure as air is dawn out into the typical low pressure areas. I do not actually think it's a big deal and imagine the power gained or lost is very small but it's a shame to see an airbox get cut up and money IMO wasted on a K&N (which is another religion to which I do not belong.)

I have an uncut airbox and have kept an eye out for a drilled one so I can do a proper road test at some point but it is not a high priority.

it HAS been tested, not just on a dyno, and it DOES work.

you have the airbox air source exactly backwards. in stock form it is at one of the HOTTEST places in the car for heat soak, which is right in front of the oil cooler. with the mod, it gets air from the COOLEST place in the car, which is right behind the front grille. the temperature change at the intake is a good 30 degree drop.

with the snorkel, not only is the inlet tiny, but the air goes through ridiculous bends and contortions to finally find its way to a restrictive air filter. we played with bigger snorkels, and they helped the flow. they weren't enough though.

the manometer testing of the airbox mod proved a reduction in restriction to ZERO, which equates to more air, which means more power, and tosses the "high pressure/low pressure" concerns out the window. you can't get below zero on a normally aspirated engine.

this is really basic physics. you can be skeptical if you want, but there are now hundreds of these out there, and we all feel the difference.

i'm sure one of the guys who has one of the D!R supercharger kits has a modded airbox they will sell or loan you. or, if you are around here some time, i can swap them back and forth on a car and you can see for yourself. quite a nice little bump.
