Looking for some "sound" stereo advice
#81

I think when it comes to car audio, best to try and keep it simple. Having so many drivers playing the same things is a recipe for trouble!

I've got to a point where I'm relatively happy with mine, aside for the need for additional deadening. I'm running a Clarion CZ703e HU, Genesis 5 Channel amp powering Morel 5 Tempo comps up front (semi-active) with rears are jrunning off HU power. Also a JL CP108 microsub in the trunk.

The semi-active element is a single rca feeding tweets and front mid's, but each has an amp channel of its own (60wrms). This means I have all the adjustment i need for crossovers and gain on the amp between mids and tweets which is quite useful in a car with poor speaker positioning.

I can adjust HPF and LPF for the rears on the HU (currently set between 60hz and 3.15Khz). I'm just about getting away with using HU power for the rears.

Using this setup and some basic time alignment I can get the stage consistently right on the front of the dash.

Same as flash I've had to do some heavy EQing. The CZ703e has a parametric EQ and I'm cutting around -6db from 2-4K.

If I were doing it all again, money no object I would go for a nice double din headunit with nav etc, a JBL MS8 to do the processing and a couple of JL XD400/4's. I would have a serious look at doing a tasteful A-pillar build for a couple of CDT ES-02's and run them down to around 300hz, then mess around with some 6.5's for the rear (with speaker mod) playing from 300hz downwards. Then remove the rear seat and go for a CS style rear seat delete with a hidden sub.

This thread has been an education - thanks guys.

New question - my iphone5 charger/AUX link is plagued with a faint whine/hiss/static detectable at high volumes. It's there at low volumes too, just easy to ignore. Any obvious troubleshooting to start with? CD and radio have ZERO noise. Is the position of the cable/electronics sensitive to certain adjacencies directly behind the head?

absolutely. you are running power and audio down the same line. any proximity of other power sources can cause issues like that. where does the cable run?

do you have individual source volume control? (i.e. FM versus CD versus AUX) if you do, make sure the levels are all the same. if the AUX level is too low, then you have to push the gain too much, and you get noise.

by the way, when i say that the levels should be the same, i mean in sound pressure, not the number value on the deck, but you also have to make sure that the level from the aux device is not too low or too high, assuming you have control of that while playing

re: cable route

The cable runs from a harness on the back of the Becker, through the in-line box o' electronic mystery, along and out the driver's side of the console trim. Until I get my phone mount sorted out the cable and phone just sit in the ashtray recess. I wouldn't think the cabling was *that* sensitive to audio interference but you never know. Kensington sells a noise-reducing cable for this purpose...

re: gains

Yes, volume control on the phone may make a difference - I'll need to experiment more with that.

the only power running down the console is for the ashtray light. unless your lights are on, that should not present a problem

however, see if you can pull the cable out and rest it on the floor or seat and see if it still makes the noise.

likely it's in the gain structure. see if the deck has an SLA feature (sound level adjustment). most decks do.

This thread is winding down but one more - ha - what may be my last question - what should I do about the brown/blue alarm wire from my old harness? Right now I'm simply ignoring it and haven't had any alarm issues, but I haven't driven the car all that much either. In my case there are two brn/blu wires coming from the old CR-1 harness - indicated by the dashed line on the diagram. The wiring diagram is a bit cryptic (to me, anyway.) I've been advised to both ground them, and to just ignore them. Which is right?

that wire ties the OEM deck to the alarm system. it retains power to the "code" that activates the deck. if you are not using the OEM deck, you don't need that wire.

Ok we shall ignore the blue/brown. Thanks again everyone for your help setting up this kickass (to me) audio system. Hopefully the info here will help someone else with theirs. .
