Sport Classic Wheels
#1

I have fallen in love .... again First it was my 968, and now it is with Sport Classic Wheels. I know that they never came original on the 968's, but I think they are the look that I am after for my Aventurine Green couple. I didn't like the original C2 5 spoke 16's, so I put on 17" 996/Boxster wheels (they were available and reasonably cheap) as in my avitar. While staring at them over the past couple of months while my car is in heated storage, I have decided that I really don't like the look of them on my 968 ... in fact I don't even like the look of them on the base 996's or Boxster's either.

I have seen them on a few members cars, and I really, really like them. But where to find them at a decent price? I would prefer a good used set (original porsche, not replicas). I have posted on Rennlist under the Boxster/S forum and on the 986 forum but no luck yet.

Does anyone have a lead on a set of 17" Sport Classic's? Or if you have them yourself, where do you get yours from.

Any info is appreciated.

This is the look I am after:

I also think these are amazingly great looking wheels on a 968 ( better than anything I've seen anyway ) and was

thinking of getting a set myself. IIRC, Wheel Enhancement has these ( Porsche OEMs ) but I believe that both the

unavailability of the dimensions I want in order to get rid of my spacers as well as the weight vs my current wheels killed that prospect

I got mine from wheelenhancement. great company to work with. There are 17 inch 7 front and 9 rear. I added a 6 mm spacer in the front.

there is also a 18 incher that are 2 piece wheels, should be lighter than the 17s. luck

Fred.....I purchased mine ( some years ago now ) from PORSCH-APART in Lancashire UK.

E-Mail Simon.......enquiries@porsch-apart.co.uk I am sure if he has any he would ship to Canada.

My 17 in Sport Classics are Front 7-55 ( off-set ) and rear 8.5 - 50 ( off-set )

Cheers Shaun

Ebay has a set of 17's for sale right now. There are some superficial scratches and such as can be seen in the photos, but they might go for a pretty low price. There is a reserve.

Given the cosmetic condition (not bad, but could use a refinish), I would think somewhere around $7-800 would be a decent price for these.

There is also a set of 18's with tires that look to be in very good condition. These have a buy it now price that appears to be reasonable IMHO.

I'm contemplating the 18's myself! I'm just not sure I want to be cleaning them!!!

that is EXACTLY what has prevented me from getting the 17" wheels i found at wheel enhancement - extremely light, and the widths and offsets to my specs, but all those webs..............

Maybe the biggest issue I had was the pads on my previous coupe- they generated a sh!tload of brake dust. Not sure what make/brand they were regardless. Perhaps with the right set of pads, cleaning the Y-spoke and web-style wheels wouldn't be as cumbersome due to less dust development.

I do know that once I had found a decent wheel brush with a long handle, it made life easier. I also used P21S gel (cut to 50% v/v with water) to clean them and they always seemed to shed the dust fairly easily. Hardest part was cleaning the corners where the webs/spokes met the actual rim.

Don't let the cleaning aspect prevent you from getting the wheels you want!

Right now, I am interested in another set - two sets actually - the 18" Sport Classic IIs I mention above and another set that shall remain nameless right now.

I'm kinda kicking myself at the moment for not jumping on those Ruf wheels from a week back or so....

I must be a fledgeling wheel whore!

it's a hard decision

with the 18" HRE wheels, the upside is that i get all the tire i want on the ground - the downside is the weight of those tires, and what it means to added stresses on hubs, spindles, and bushings

with the 17s i found, the upside is the huge weight loss, improved comfort in ride, and the ability to rotate tires, as the rims would be identical, and i would only have a thin spacer on the rear - the downside is the cleaning (which is a HUGE issue to me - i hate cleaning wheels, and won't let them stay dirty inside or out) - also, i would have to go down from a 285/30 on the rear to a 255/40 - the front would only change aspect ratio, but the width still goes down a bit, even in the same 255 - not sure what this would mean in handling compromise on the street - on the track (if i ever take it back out there) i would certainly notice the difference

i like the look of the sport classic (i have something similar on the denali, which would be rather cool, especially if i can get trailer wheels to match), but i'm waffling on the change

Anybody know whose car that is at the top of the page? I think it looks pretty elegant!

I clipped it from the Wheel Enhancement site. If you click on Wheels/17" Sport Classic, then choose:

View this wheel on a:

Ocean Blue 1992-1995 968 Cabriolet

So I don't know who owns the car, just where the picture came from. But I do think the wheels are on that car, no just a photoshop of that wheel on a particular model.

I do agree, elegant is the right word to describe it. Also perhaps "classy" as in sport class(ic).

Jim .... I had a look at eBay but could not find the 17's that you saw for sale. The only one's I saw was a set of 2-17's for the front and 2-18's for the rear, and I don't want to start getting into that.

If you have a look again could you email me the item number or something like that so I can try and find them.
