antenna question
#21

Now I'm really confused. I'm trying to figure out how to release the radio and slide it out to check the antenna amp power lead.

Read up a couple of posts?

I need to get checked for ADHD or something.

Don't feel bad, all the radio manufacturers seem to want to do it a different way.

What brand and model # of radio do you have?

The radio is a Sony XR U330, it came with the car. I scared up the manual, nothing about how to install or remove.

most decks use 2 little thin strips of metal that are used to slide down along the sides to release the deck

any good car stereo shop can pop that out for you

they can also check your power antenna lead, antenna booser, and diagnose your problem

Thanks for the tip Flash. I've had horrendous experience with car audio shops. I don't mind paying but the results are usually in the drunken hacker range of quality with accompanying side damage and grease on the car as a bonus.

I'll fashion some metal strips and slide them in there, see if I can do some 12v welding and keep you posted.

aaaak - the strips are very small, about 1/4" wide and 20 guage or so

seriously, find a good shop, or even go to best buy - have them just pull the deck out of the slot and stop there - shouldn't cost you much if anything

are you anywhere near me?

Thanks for the offer Flash, I'd love to get your audio assistance but check my signature.

20 ga. by 1/4" should be no problemo.

My main audio system has one speaker at the rear of the car with supplementary speakers under the hood. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

when i first got my car, it had a kenwood receiver in it. i went to circuit city/best buy and asked for a set of kenwood remover tools. they just gave me a couple of them for free. let's face it, they install hundreds of radios and surely just throw out all those remover tools.

my new radio is a sony xplod. the new remover tools look slightly different, but they all pretty much work universally.

i'd suggest going to the local installer and just ask him for an extra set of remover tools. they'll probably be happy to give you some. ask for a set of sony's if you have a sony.

To bring out an old topic...

Where does the power cable to the antenna booster run and does the antenna cable it self run? I'm sure I could find it but tired today after 5h of installation of a new head unit and speakers.

I also have very spotty FM and no AM to speak of.

both the antenna and the power (12V DC) run from the radio head unit back to the antenna. First check that you have 12 V at the end of the wire at the antenna. You have to remove the headliner in that area. Pretty easy, just take your time and be gentle. This is an under one hour job. You'll see the wire right away. If you have 12V at the wire then it's the amp. They seem to go pretty regularly on our cars. You can replace the amp with a VW part that is identical for about half what Porsche will rip you for. I don't remember if I got the mast also but I think I got only the base and it worked with my mast. Tighten down the ring fairly well or the antenna base will rotate, then you have to take down the headliner again.

Weak FM and no AM was exactly what my symtoms were, good luck.
