Converting hi-fi to regular audio?
#1

I need to remove the hi-fi audio modules under the armrests because of my cage, but I'd like to leave the radio functional. I'm actually putting 944 door panels on, and so there will just be one speaker on each door. Does anyone know how they should be connected? Does the amp under the driver's seat need to be replaced or removed?

Thanks,

Mike

The amp under the drivers seat will need to be retained if the current radio does not have an internal amplifier. It is unlikely that the radio has an internal amplifier, since you have a completely stock stereo in there, IIRC.

Bypassing the stock amplifier shouldn't be terribly difficult if you decide to go that route.

if you install an aftermarket stereo with an internal amp you can remove the amps from under the seats and tap into the speaker wires behind the headunit.

then you can run which ever speakers you prefer in the doors and the rear side panels.

there is nothing to exotic about the hi-fi system in these cars.

just a line level headunit and a few amps under the seats which run to some basic crossovers in the doors and the rear panels.

it's all shown in the factory wiring diagrams.

I'm not replacing my stock head unit. I just want to replace the hifi modules in the door with plain old speakers.

I wasn't sure whether the modules in the door simply contained a crossover or if there was something more high tech going on. I'll have a look at the factory diagrams.

Thanks,

Mike

There is only a crossover in the door panel. IIRC, the wiring harness has 4 wires on a little black plastic molex style connector - a pos and neg feeding the input of the crossover and a pos and neg that gets you back out of the crossover and feeds the input of the tweeter located high in the door by the window switch. Once you remove the panel, you should be able to splice those together and the result would be one pos and one neg with continuity through to the tweeter location. Connect that to the 4x6 hole in the 944 panel and you're good to go. Hope that helps...
