audio upgrade suggestions for my coupe
#1

Hey guys, with my new 92 coupe, I am looking to replace the entire sound system. It has a crappy aftermarket Pioneer CD deck, and at least one LH speaker is blown -- so later for the old gear.

I'm not looking to set any dB records here. Being a bass player I want decent low end response, but I don't need to compete with the boomin systems.

Relevant option codes for my car are:

331 331 AM/FM Cassette w/2 door speakers

454 Automatic speed control

490 Hi-Fi sound system

494 Amplifier system

Here's what I need:

- head unit with ipod inputs

- speaker suggestions

- amplifier suggestions

I don't want to take up a lot of space so I may pass on subwoofers at least for now if I can get decent low end from door-mount speakers.

Thanks guys!

A place I get most of my audio gear is Crutchfield. Their CD player selection is at the link below. Try using their search on the left column for Ipod compatible. Alpine has a great selection with this feature.

I think you will find the low end lacking on the modest sized speakers in the 968. A simple sub mounted on a plywood facia in the right rear cuby adds a lot of dimension.

I have a 360w 4 channel amp for the cabin and a bridged 200w amp for the sub. Works nice.

Wow.. small world. I'm a bass player also. I second the Alpine head unit. I've owned several and they are awesome.

I also wonder about the speakers. I have posted about this in the past, but it received no bite. What can be done about the 3-way crossover? I do not believe there are many aftermarket 3 speaker sets.

Also Flash.. how do you like the bazooka(if you read this thread)? I do not want to do anything permanent to the car ie.) mount sub, amp, ect.

I assume that quality 6.5 inch speakers mounted in the rear would give good low-end response; i'm partial to round speakers.

Joe, a bit off topic, what kind of music are you playing?

great thanks guys, definitely some good leads to go on.

Flash, I'd also be interested to hear how you like your bazooka.

Far as music I play, I'm in an acoustic-female singer/songwriter poppy-rock project, I do some groove-funky stuff, and I also play jazz upright.

The @&%#ING COOL THING ABOUT THIS CAR is that I can put my whole setup in the car - my whole electric rock rig, or my string bass fits in the back too!! When I found that I could do all that in a 150+ Porsche, that's when I went totally nuts about this car.

I replaced the OEM deck in my 92 Coupe with a Kenwood KDC-X590 head unit. Link: http://www.kenwoodusa.com/products/...&k3=172&pr=2359

I purchased the KCA-iP500 accessory which provides iPod connectivity. The iPod USB/connector is located in the glove box with the head unit providing navigation and control over the iPod. It also charges the iPod while connected.

I am really happy with this set up so far. All speakers are original (I have the 10-speaker hi-fi option). I plan to replace the two rear speakers and add a sub at some point.

Well, I'm in a rock/funk/rush-like group that can be found at ProjectColor3. I unfortunately cannot fit all of my bass equipment in the p-car, and that's where the surburban comes in. I have to carry around an Ampeg svt-4 pro w/ 8X10 cabinet. It's a pain but well worth the sound.

Our guitarist left, and now it's just the drummer and myself. We had another cd cut but it was lost in the hurricane along with the master tracks. le sigh* I'll definitely keep release dates posted in the off topic section.

you know you CAN fit a 4x10 in the back

hell, what am I saying. You've got a Suburban, why would you want to use your pcar as a gear hauler. sorry I get excited sometimes
