Antenna delete?
#1

Has anyone come up with a bung for the antenna hole? My antenna isn't looking so good and I never use the radio so I'm thinking of removing it.

Funny you should mention the antenna...

My neighbor is doing a big home addition and completely ripped off the roof of his house a couple days ago. (I would never do it this late in the year, but he didn't ask me.) I have a carport for the Porsche but it still lets some debris and dust through, so I put a cover on my 968. Before putting the cover on, I unscrewed the antenna and laid it on the driver's windshield wiper.

On my way to work this morning, driving at normal cruising speed on the Dulles Toll Road, I had a WTF? moment: There was my antenna resting on the windshield wiper. The funny thing was that the radio reception was just fine. I listen to the news station on the way into work, then switch to a recorded book once I get on the Toll Road. There was no problem at all receiving the news station (WTOP-FM) for the usual stretch of road and I noticed no difference in the reception quality. (I have a Sony aftermarket car stereo, if anyone wonders.) The antenna did not budge from its perch on the wiper on my 18-mile drive to work and I screwed it back on this morning at work.

I wonder if my antenna even functions?

Can't help you on deleting the antenna, though...

I replaced my antenna with an MDX (its a short stuby one) - I only did it because I like the look over the bee sting (performance is the same or may be a little better). Have you looked into the fake sharks fins - kind of funky but cheap (not sure of the seal though). Another option would be one of the newer satellite/nav (hockey pucks) - you wouldn't need to hook it up to your stereo and should have a seal simular to regular antenna - I've seen one that will supposedly fit our cars, but it is more expensive (IIRC around $50) for essentially a plug...on that thought - have you tried calling bumper plugs? Maybe they can do something and match your paint too?

Just some thoughts...

Bob - if the station was local (and FM) then the length of your antenna has little affect - more to do with AM and bringing in distance stations....

Had my local body shop patch the hole. Looks great.

I actually kind of like the stock antenna. Gives a car a business/sports look. Much better than the shark fin on the new BMW's in my opinion
