the rear speakers have an integrated amplifier. As such, you may wish to stick with OEM units. Call Rick at 570/815-6504 for the parts.

There are 5.25-inch speakers in the doors below the armrest. I think the factory speakers were Infinity. I replaced mine with Pioneers about a year ago and think it sounds slightly better but the speakers are too small to have any bass response. At the top of the door panel is a tweeter made by Nokia. Yes, Nokia. I think it's a 2-inch tweeter assembly.

I have not had the speakers in the back of the car out but it's my understanding that they are 4x6-inch ovals. The upshot is that there are no decent-sized speakers in the car to get any bass. Some people live with it, some install subwoofers, some figure out a way to replace the 5.25-inch speakers in the doors with 6.5- or 7-inch speakers, and some completely redesign the system.

The speakers below the armrest are very easy to replace, so you can swap something in there in a few minutes. The tweeters are harder and the 4x6 ovals are much harder. One problem I had was that the wire to the speakers in the driver's door was broken in my car. I had to thread a new wire. Not a huge problem but a problem nonetheless.

Are you sure about this? I replaced mine, they were 6.5" round in the rear, they did not have amps. The stock were Nokia (8 ohm) and I got a BIG improvement over the stock setup. You may be thinking about the 10 (?) speaker setup, I know nothing about that system.

Also, my car is an '93, I THINK they changed the setup for '94.

As for the front, woofer (mid) it's a 5 1/4 and a 1" tweeter. I cut the stock tweeter out and installed the new tweeter in the stock grille but it took some time/effort.

My right rear speaker is also dead, so I've been waiting for it to cool down enough to replace it (you pretty much have to wait till November here in Austin for that to happen ). Anyway, I've heard that getting to the rear speakers in a coupe is a pretty big job, which involves removing the side windows . Has this been the experience of those have done it? How bad of a job is it? Thanks.

Not really that difficult at all. You have to remove the window trim, but not the window. It took me about ten minutes to get to it.

I replaced all of my speakers a couple of months back. Mod #1 (my girlfriend thinks I am an idiot for using smiley faces )

Anyhow, here is the link with some pictures:

No, it's not a tough job, annoying but not tough. As someone else said you have to remove the window trim (but NOT the window) and 2 or 3 screws in the side panel and the edge rubber/trim by the door edge but that's about it. You will NOT be removing the panel, you will only be pulling it out far enough to reach your arm in w/ a short stubby screwdriver to unscrew the stock speakers. That's about it.

Thanks for the info on removing the rear speaker. I had looked through the procedure on Clark's Garage for removing in in a 944, and it sounds like a nightmare. Glad to hear it's not so bad in the 968. I'll try to tackle it this weekend.

Mine has the integrated amplifier. Other than the built-in amp, it looks like a very simple, cheap little speaker, so I took it to Circuit City, thinking I could find a suitable replacement for a few bucks. I'm 100% ignorant about all things audio, so I don't know if the guy there was giving me a line, but he says that speakers like this aren't generally available in the aftermarket, and a replacement from Porsche is likely to be around 300 bucks. Ouch! I'll check tomorrow, but can anyone confirm this? Circuit City says they can install a pair of new rear speakers without the built-in amps for around $200, and claim they will have much better sound. But I don't understand how speakers without built-in amps will be able to deliver the same volume unless I add an external amp. Thanks.
