Upstate NY Recommendations Greatly Appreciated
#1

OK, I've lived here for 20 years, through 2 P-cars, and I've been to several dealers and shops who specialize in German cars. Some were OK, some were not up to my standards. One shop I recall only put back half of the air cleaner cover screws on my 944S, which really pissed me off and made me wonder about the quality of the rest of the work they performed. I mean come on, seriously?!

As I've got the new 968, I want to go through it top to bottom; all new belts and hoses, water pump, seals, head gasket, etc. and it seems like the responsible thing to do to collect any wisdom from the collective forum on the best place to have such service performed. I don't mind traveling to get it done, as convenience takes a distant second seat to quality of workmanship.

Well, the recommendations aren't pouring in for Upstate NY mechanics, although I have a few leads for places to go and places to NOT go. I also have quotes coming in for the work I want to have done - all maintenance that just seems prudent, as the car runs fantastically right now.

New top:

...$2200 installed, that seems like a lot to me compared to other quotes I've seen here and online.

Belts, hoses, and new water pump, (just because):

... Porsche Water Pump New $625.00

... Conti Tech Timing Belt Kit w/ tensioner's and sprockets $554.00

... Conti Tech Belt $24.00, Power steering $12.00 = $36.00

... Lemforder hoses Upper $54.00, Lower $36.00, Water pump hose$14.45 = $104.45

Total Hours for water pump, timing belt kit all hoses andbelts 8.5 hours = $807.50, so parts and labor $2700.95

Head gasket replacement, (just because):

Reinz head set $330.00 + 12 hours $1140.00 = $1470.00

Does this seem reasonable, or too high? Charging $554 for a Conti Tech belt kit, when I can get it for $200 online seems a bit much to me. I also think 12 hours for a head gasket job is too much, considering they're going to be in there anyway. My book says 10-11 hours, and that includes a lot of "disconnect the negative battery terminal", "drain the coolant", etc. that they're already doing for the belt job.

I've located my old mechanic who had moved, and have scheduled the hoses and belts. I have located most of the parts (I warned him ahead of time) but I can't find some of the parts that were recommended in another thread, specifically, the crank pulley seal and oil pump seal.

Are those known by another name, or worst case, does anyone have a part number for either of those?

Alternatively, maybe I should just buy the whole Front Engine Reseal Kit from Pelican Parts, but neither of those appears to be for a 968...
