Annapolis "968 Fun Day" Wrap Up
#1

Thanks Kathy!!!

Just got in and checked my pics...I'll post a quick one now and I know everyone else has lots of others. Maybe Eric would be kind enough to setup a photo album thingy for us.

Cars, Crabs, Boats, Gelato, Coffee, and quite a few spectators...and the weather cooperated for a great day.

Thanks so much for coming, everyone! You're all great company and it was a great day because of you.

Eric, if you can create a "2007 Annapolis FunDay" album, we'd love to post our pic's. I'll include a few here.

Man, could that weather have been more spectacular?!?!?!?! Crystal blue skies, puffy little white clouds, high 70's, a slight breeze. Our waterfront location afforded a spectacular view of sailboats in the harbor and the historic 200+ year old buildings around the dock.

How much fun was that to see seven beautiful 968's all lined up at city dock?!?! Amusing to watch the reactions from folks walking around, looking at our cars and reading the signs on our windshields. Loved seeing kids pointing and saying 'Wow! Porsches!' and dragging their not-so-hesitant dads to come and look. We had a few very elderly gents come by who reminisced about their long-gone Porsches, and that P-car sparkle was still in their eyes. We were visited by several other Porsches, as well as a Ferrari (who humbly gave us a thumbs up), a Morgan, and a 62 BMW and others.

After grabbing a quick lunch, we paraded up the red-bricked Main Street, then headed out to cross the 4.5 mile Bay Bridge to the eastern shore.

The country roads exceeded even my expectations as we passed Chesapeake Bay bywaters, farms, and forests. (and I only made two wrong turns, oops!) Crabs and beer at the Crab Claw waterfront deck in St. Michaels -- a great venue to get to know everyone. What really good people this 968 fraternity has! Some cars took off for home (good call, as you'll see). A few of us stayed on and after a short walk in town (husbands were happy to get away scott-free, no jewelry purchases that day) and a scoop of ice cream, we headed back.

Chased by a huge ominous dark cloud , the last three cars (all cab's) did as any good ragtop driver does -- ignore it and drive fast with the top down til the last possible moment when the rain no longer blows around the car's cabin. Even the rain was fun, since you could see it rolling across the bay.

Special thanks to Jay, who goaded me into organizing this in the first place and to you and the Mrs. for coming the furthest distance.

Just hope everyone had as much fun as I did! I was nervous about it since I'm a rookie, so I'm happy to see that a good time was had by all. Can't wait til the next one!!!

Thanks again for coming!

I need one of those smily face icons except not smiling with tears rolling down his yellow cheeks!

I'll spare you my sad story and just confidently report "Next time!"

Happy you all enjoyed your weekend!

    Kathy --

Thanks for organizing a spectacular 968 event! What a great setting for showing off these wonderful cars. (By the way, the laminated 968-information card you provided for our windshields was an especially nice touch.)

I'm STILL bummed I had to scoot back to Solomons and miss out on the run over to St. Michaels. Sounds like everyone had a great time.

I certainly will throw my kudos to Kathy for a fun day. Could not have asked for a better day weather wise. It was fun driving thru old Annapolis with everyone ogling and counting the cars. The fun run certainly had challenges and a couple of unexpected "turnarounds". I was last in line which is a great position as it allows me to lag and then speed up to the rest. My pictures are about the same as everyone else including the pile of crabs in front of Darryl. I will have to say this about Kathy she certainly is a take charge kind of woman. Way to go. Will have to put together another fun run, maybe thru the VA wine country or even an overnight to the Charolettesville area.

I vote for a Virginia Wine Country Tour! It's too far to the Napa /Sonoma Valley, and I do miss it so!

Maybe find a B & B or 2 or an Inn that would accomodate a rowdy 968 group??? I would have about a 10 hour drive to get there, so would need to come a day ahead, and it would be nice to have a designated spot to bunk down; preferably one where malicious idiots would not key the Porsches (as happened to me in my own driveway!!! Not the 968; my "new" 911SC!)

When do they uncork the new batch? Maybe early October??? Or if the Winery has a "leftovers" sale, I would be up for helping them dispose of that as well! "Yesterday's Wine" and all that!!!

Clutch and Hydraulics are in, M030 Bars are in and set, now to change brake fluid and button everything up, and I'm ready to roll! Pick a date and keep us posted!

Darth, we have been to quite a few B&Bs in VA wine country. Most are quite civilized. Never had any problems. Will have to put my mind to work. I have a good friend who is a wine judge and knows VA wines extremely well. He doesn't drive a Porsche but maybe he (and wife) could ride with someone. Just thinking out loud. October (last 2 weeks) is not good for me as we are planning a trip to Italy and my daughter is getting married in September. Overnight seems to a plus to me, then again I'm retired and don't have to worry about Mondays. Trouble with B&Bs is that they don't have a lot of rooms so that might limit the choices.

I'm liking the Virginia Winery Tour concept, Cosimo! An overnighter would help us pace the, uh, 'tastings'. No pressure but it sounds like we might have a quorum. Maybe an August escape to the mountains to beat the heat? Or September/October. Weekend would be best for moi. (Darn these jobs!) Great that you know a wine judge....remember, life is too short to drink bad wine.

I'm also thinking of a southern Maryland get-together, really great roads and bay scenery. I had a passing thought of spending an afternoon at MD Int'l Raceway in Budd's Creek, MD, to watch funny cars, dragsters, and muscle cars do the quarter mile.....or even have some of us run the track, eh? And 944/84 lives down that way, so he knows the roads....

For those who came to Annapolis, be sure to post your pic's in the new album that Eric so kindly set up for us! Thanks also for your kind words and kudos...glad the day turned out so well, thanks to all of you!

And thanks all for warmly welcoming my friend Lynn (who was Chief Communications Officer, Director of Photography, Assistant Hostess, and VP of Navigation -- I'm not entirely to blame for our two turnarounds! ). She and I are both seeking single male applicants for the job of Chief Companion...finder's fees might be involved!

Darth, OUCH! Can't believe someone keyed your new gem!

Being retired makes the choice of times for a road trip much more "open ended"! If the consensus is August, that will work for me!

Yes, can you believe someone would actually have the cahones to lift up the car cover and drag a key along the door, in my own driveway! We have had some issues with a cretin that used to stay down the street, but thought he had moved on; maybe not! Time to install the Security Cameras!!! Oh, well, it's repairable. Life is full of idiots; just don't let one of them have me catch him/her being one on my property!

Wine or Crabs! Either way, I'm in for a road trip! Just waiting for my new Motive Power Bleeder to be delivered, and get all new Super Blue installed! Then, Vroom, vrooooom!

Hello Everyone

I just loaded my pics in the gallery!

Sorry it has taken so long to write this all down as we were exhausted from our 700 mile (are you reading this Don?) journey to Washington and Maryland last weekend, and business travel started again on Tuesday. I have finally shrunk my pictures down enough to post them in the gallery and I hope you all enjoy them.

The weather forecast for last Saturday was for 60 degrees and drizzle, but we thought we would have a good time anyway…boy, were we surprised when we got to Annapolis and found blue and sunny skies and 72 degrees. We can’t imagine a more beautiful situation to show off our 968s. I believe the final count was 9 cars and we certainly attracted a lot of attention. It was great to finally meet George (Huskydog) and his umm..Husky. 968ers just seem to keep popping out of the woodwork. We met Bill from Solomon’s and Tim from Potomac Region who hadn’t been to any of our events before. We spent 4 hours polishing our cars and chatting with the many curious onlookers and got a chance to catch up with old friends and get to know new ones. One young man showed up with his $1,200 first Porsche (944). His father told me he wanted his son to learn on a project car to build respect for his vehicle. Until last week the car sat outside and unwashed, but when he heard about our gathering the car suddenly got a wash and wax, and of course needed to be kept covered in the garage…how’s that for a first step toward Porsche-mania?

The ride through Annapolis was amazing! I will never tire of the look on peoples faces as they notice a single rare Porsche, and then another, another, and another,,,

The ride through the Maryland countryside out to St. Michael’s island was beautiful and challenging. Don’t worry about a few missed turns, I don’t think I’ve been on a fun run yet that didn’t have a bit of confusion, its all in how you handle it, and we could tell that the smile never left your face. Lynn was a great addition, if any of you single 968ers are interested in dating her send a picture (of your car…lol). How about a 2 968 family for Kathy (like Mark and Kim, no fighting over who gets the Porsche today).

Upon our arrival in St. Michael’s we of course made ourselves right at home, creating our own row of parking. Since we were blocking a couple of busses they offered to switch with us and we created an impromptu corral.

The crabs were spectacular, the beer flowed (not too freely) and as always I am amazed at how many topics this group can discuss other than our cars.

The day came to an end with our following Darryl and Christine back toward DC (did I mention that I HATE driving anywhere near DC?).

Probably I should continue our saga under a different topic, but since I’m on a roll here I may as well continue. Darryl offered to help me make my new iPod purchase more permanent by setting up my stereo. I have been living with only back speakers for a while and now that the car is performing well its time for some “tuneage”. We met at his shop around 10AM and with the exception of lunch Darryl spent his whole day with me taking the car apart and finding out all of the intricacies of the stereo system (I’ll share pictures of my rear speaker boxes with built in amp, tweeter, woofer in a different thread). DARRYL/CHRISTINE Thank you So much!!! I’ll try to find a way to thank you appropriately; I could never figure this out on my own.

As we rode off into the sunset, iPod blasting and the top down, we finished our trip to DC in a horrible traffic jam when we found I-495 closed around Wilmington, DE. No problem for us, we worked our way through back roads and around Kennett Square and Longwood Gardens (Hmmm…might be an interesting Fun Run Route).

Regards,

Jay

Nice pictures all. I would have joined you but that would have meant washing one of the cars. Look forward to the pictures of the stereo Jay, one of these days I'm going to get at least one of my cars over to Darryl for some stereo work. Had I known you two were staying over night, Kim and I would have been glad to put you up.

Darn, I sure wish there was more 968's in my neck of the woods! One of these days, I want to jump in the car with my wifey and mosey on up to one of the 968 gatherings...but I'm still a working stiff

Hehe, I got my car from Houston Texas, so there is one less in your area now, sorry

And I agree, one of these days I will start attending these events too. Right now all the money is going into making sure the car will actually MAKE it to these future events
