Alternator Club sport
#1

Hi

I have a club sport, and the battery still has problems with short journeys, alternator is charging at 13.8 volts, however i have been reading that the CS was manufactured with a smaller alternator producing less amps, is this the case?

If so is there any way i can tell which type of alternator i have fitted? the car has aftermarket air con fitted and was a demo for porsche for 12000 miles, so it may of been upgraded., part numbers would help if anyone knows them.

Also does a 944 alternator fit a 968.

Thanks for reading this, any info would be a great help.

Simon,

My parts book does not show a different number for the various models of 968, all the same.

# 928-603-011-05.

The 944 alternator has the same part number.

Pelican Parts has a price of $1,249.00

Ouch!

Thanks Brian, thats a great help, i have found a company in the states on ebay doing remanfactured ones for £114.00 dollars, cheap i think, he says it fits 944 and 928 as well as 968, the amp rating is 130amps, i am thinking if i need one it may be worth the risk as he is so cheap.

Thanks

Hi Brian

Just found some info, while trawling the tech info on the forum, the original 968 spec book states the following on alternators

normal 968 A/W 115/1610

CS 968 A/W 90/1260

Do you think it was the case and now porsche has aligned the parts book so the same alternator is for all models? also the one on ebay is 130 amps, do you think this would be ok?

Any input would be gratefull

Have you tried the same question over at http://www.porsche968uk.co.uk/

They may be of more help, as th CS was not sold in the states.

Sorry I was not aware of the difference.

I would guess since those cars were stipped of air con and some electronics, that the amperage rating would be less so Porsche spec'd a different alternator. It probably wieghs less to.

I could be wrong but, I would think you should no problems with fitting a 944 alternator.

Hi Simon,

I have a 968CS.

Indeed the CS model did have the lower amp alternator fitted to save weight, but if you ordered 'optional' air-con, then the normal 'heavier' alternator was fitted.

Given your air-con was aftermarket, I'd say you have the lower amp alternator fitted.

Steve

if you do that, be sure to replace the main charge cable - it is already undersize for the 105 amps the alternator puts out

also, you will probably have to change the regulator to an adjustable one

i would have your alternator load tested - output voltage could be fine, but still not be putting out the amperage required

i presume you have done the normal things, like cleaning ground connections, making sure your battery is in top shape via a hydrometer check (again, voltage check is not enough), and making sure your main cables are without cracks or corrosion

don't assume something is fine because it is new, or "looks" ok - check it anyway
