Airbag light issues--error when connecting Durametric
#1

Folks: The Airbag light in my 968 Cab is misbehaving. It is mostly "on" but periodically it will go off then come back "on". I purchased a Durametric unit about 7 years ago just to have on hand. Never connected it until now. When I connect it, it "sees" the engine module and alarm module. But it reports an error and cannot connect to the Airbag module. I contacted Durametric and they simply stated that is the problem. Needless to say after spending $$$ on the Durametric, I had expected better fault diagnosis capability.  Any ideas on diagnosing the problem?

As an aside---do our 968 vintage cars have the airbag system connected to the seatbelts so that the airbag will "know" if someone is sitting, for example, in the passenger seat?

Thanks.

Hi, do you have the latest software?  Mine is 6.5.3.6 which doesn't seem to suffer with the same random connection problems as did Durametric 4 and 5. ....

I see you have a newer version than mine.  I'm reluctant to "upgrade" as mine works just fine, and in case the newer version is actually the problem.  So I cannot help further only to say that I can see, access, and manipulate the airbag fault code, and from memory I can turn the light on and off (not 100% sure on that but i know I can switch some of the fault lights on and off)

Have you examined the connections below the glovebox?  I had airbag triggering problems only to find that some turkey had used the airbag 12v input as a convenient source of power for the radio(!!)  Since removing the extra power line I've had no airbag problems.

I guess another question is can you manipulate any of the other faults/lights?  ie test the connectivity/functionality of your Durametric.

I hope that helps,

Robert

Robert:

I will check the connections. The car has an aftermarket radio so I wouldn't be surprised if somebody played with the wiring.

If you were using the cheap Chinese dongle cable and the later version of software the lead will now be bricked

Waylander. Can you elaborate please? I am using the cables supplied by Durametric. Is that the cheap Chinese dongle you are referring to?

If you have genuine Durametric then no issues

You have to have the ignition on position II before it will work

I purchased my unit from Durametric. My frustration is that Durametric connects to the engine and alarm system perfectly, but not the airbag system.

Then the airbag ECU could be the problem or the wiring to it
