after a night's rest, 968 could not start at 1st try...

=====================

But then, when I tried again, the engine could start fine at the 2nd attempt and thereafter.

So, it was then I suspected that FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR could need a replacement. And an FPR was replaced. Still, same thing happened again. The 968 could only start up at the 2nd attempt.

Please advise.

Cheers,

Did you replace the fuel pressure check valve at the fuel pump also? That is the device that holds fuel pressure for a short time, not the FPR.

I second the check valve. That is what holds the pressure for an easy start.

Yep, had the same problem with a Volvo years ago. Replaced a bunch of things, it was the check valve that solved the problem.

Thank you all.

Check valve is the part! My mechanic had it replaced today. It works.

My ( tip ) 968 has done this for three days in a row now, so looks like it's time to change the check valve.

Not to be confused with the same problem I had which was due to the coil wire, causing the exact same symptoms ( not catching at first turn of the key but working every time on the second try ) . But since the coil wire issue was fixed and it's been fine for many months since then, likely the check valve is the new culprit .

lol - well, while he has it in the air, and is right there at the rear of the car, he can check your trans fluid

Would have... but just looked at the records : the trans fluid was replaced 28 k miles ago, and you also checked the level ( when you did the 4,000,000 point inspection checklist, lol - thank you ! ) , so I think that'll be fine, just have to deal with the fuel check valve for now :-)

i did not check the trans fluid level. i know that because i am not comfortable with being uderneath a running car on jackstands, and don't even do that with my own car. that being said, i may have seen the records, and determining that there were no leaks, concluded that it was full.

Interesting ; after quite a few days of failing to start at the first turn of the key ( when resting for at least eight hours or so, but typically overnight ) soon as the weather warmed up considerably this past week, in the morning or any other time of the day for that matter after sitting for a long time it catches on just fine at the first turn . So, if it is a bad check valve not retaining sufficient fuel in the system it seems to me the outside temperature should make any difference...should it ? So if on cold mornings or cold days it starts / catches on only on the second turn of the key, but on warm days it exhibits no such problem at all, what else could it be that causes that ?

most seals and things move and work better when warm. the check valve could definitely be temperature sensitive.

good to know. i was thinking the extreme triple digit heat may have generated just enough vapors trapped in the fuel rails to allow immediate starts <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

since that vapor would have to go past the injectors first, i doubt it. i would think it would stumble due to lack of enough fuel if it were vapor coming out.

Have you checked the DME relay? This because this relay does two things. 1 gives a plus to the fuelpump and second a plus to the idle valve motor..

I have had the same symptoms years and years ago when I bought the car. After a search it became clear to me that the idle controler works fine when hot or at the second attempt to start the car.

It was frustrating that such a simple relay causes this symptoms.

yup, I have two spare DME relays for each car ( learned from experience ) and no matter what the symptoms that's always the first thing I test

( ok, when I say "no matter what the symptoms" I'm not including clunking noises coming from the rear left wheel, but pretty much everything else, lol )

Another thing to check is the Temperature sensor. If this is faulty it can tell the computer the wrong temperature and you can get the wrong choke. any auto electrician or mechanic will be able to check it. The readings are in the workshop manual.

Great topic guys, cost to replace fuel pressure check valve ? And what did the coil wire issue run you?

ds968 had a high tension lead issue, and not actually a coil wire issue.

cost to replace the check valve should be minimal. it's about an hour job and the part is pretty inexpensive.
