#21

i can see the opposite direction thing being effective - my concern, which is now moot, was that the tail lights would be on

The soultion is less than optimum, for everyone because the fog beams don't turn off when you want them to, or with the hardwired logic in the lighting circuit.

Two scenaiors I can see that my provice complications: 1. Driving at night in municipalities where there has been active enforcement of driving with auxiliary lighting when the conditions don't warrant it, or trying to maintain a low profile during random sobriety checks.

And 2. Having the fog beam on at the same time the high beam driving lights are on. Is there a heat issue with both filaments burning for extended periods (like 1/2 hour - 1 hour)? The lense is glass so I don't think that is a problem. The rest of the assembly is plastic. In stock form, the fogs turn off when the high beams are on. Probably not an issue in most sceanarios.

I wonder how the vehicles in Canada operate?

Q #1) Do their cars have fog lamps and if so, how do their cars relate in operation to the most excellent questions/comments Dave has brought to light (pun)?

Q #2) Going a bit further, is it worth installing a 2 position switch to break the light jumper on command? I believe the switch could be placed next to the Fog lamp switch on the LH side of the steering column. I believe this would operate something similar to the radio mute switch function installed on the center pedestal for the factory installed phone option.

While I wanted to activate the lights for personal reasons here in the N. Atlanta area, I realize the active driving lights are not for everyone and not permissable in all environments/locations.

In all my bright ideas, this one may over heat! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

FYI – 968 DRL’s in Canadian cars – just went out to the car to check the sequence:

1. Outboard FOG lights

• ON anytime the engine is running, day or night.

• ON with Parking Lights

• OFF if engine is not running but ignition switch is on 1 or 2

2. Inboard Driving Lights –

• Only ON with High Beams ON

• FOG lights stay OFF in this situation

3. Headlight LOW Beams ON

• Outboard FOG lights are OFF unless the FOG light switch is “on” position

• Driving lights do not operate with Low beams ON

4. High Beams ON

• FOG lights stay OFF – even if FOG light switch is “on” position

• Inboard Driving light ON automatically

EXCEPT – Flick to Pass High Beam – then both FOG and DL are ON

What does this all mean?

Basically, the Fogs stay on anytime the car is running except when the headlights are on. Then you need to press the switch to keep them on.

Anytime the High Beams are “on”, the Fog lights stay OFF – no matter what the switch position – and the Driving lights stay ON.

The Flick to Pass switch changes everything – then both Fog and DL switch on momentarily as long as the lever is pulled back.

Whew! That gets confusing – and I bet I still missed some combination! So if you want all this combination to work, you probably have to get the relay.

Thanks for checking on your car and providing a detailed synopsys of how it is supposed to work. I like your sequencing better. I will leave the jumper in for now but will be ordering the relay.

I think the part I like the most is that the lights are off when she's not putting out out any juice (no accidental dead battery please) and that the inbd and outbd lamps don't illuminate at the same time except momentary thru actuation of the lever.

No problem schwarz968 - forgot to add that with the DRL's "on", the parking lights are still "off" unless the HL switch is turned to parking lights. So no problem with taillights on during the daytime.

Some of the newer cars in Canada with DRL's have a 50% or so intensity in the DRL mode and then 100% when the lights are turned on. I've seen lots of weird combinations, all lgihting on all the time (HL's, parking, etc) in 1990's Mercedes, and then the 50% low intensity setup in Chrysler mini-vans. The problem with the latter is all the cars that drive around without taillights on at dusk! The HL output is just enough to illumiate the road, but people forget or just dont realize nothing else is lit up!

Anyway, go for the relay. The only thing I'd like to do is to get DL on when I want them on - now I have to pull back and hold the turn signal lever. There's a way to do that with 944/951's but the same G6 bridge relay is not there in our 968's.

I got the relay for Christmas and installed it. The jumper is out. It's sweet and worth it to me.

Hey Stephen - I forgot all about this post! Glad you got it working. Our cars are so low small and low compared to the SUV's around on the roads these days that anything to make the presence of the 968 more prominent has to be good. Hope it all works out well.

man did you hit that nail on the head. Greimann's lamp assy is pretty slick. If you install it let be know how it works out. It sounds pretty neat, just not sure how visible it will be with the lens assy retracted.

I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year.

OK, so can anyone speak to the differences between doing this versus getting the RoW headlamps (w/ the "city lights") installed instead? My assumption is that it's basically the same thing, except for the price difference (RoW's being MUCH more expensive) and the brightness of the light (5W city lights v. full power jumped DLR)

This is an old thread but I've been interested in adding daylight running lights for safety reasons for some time, esp since all newer cars have them. Drivers seem to pay more attention to cars with lights than without. Been running my fog lights for this reason but adding the CDN relay would be a better solution.  Seems to be a NLA part now but still digging (open to guidance here). But, before I spend a whole lot more time on this does anyone know the answer to a stupid question of mine - do the headlights come up or just the headlights are illuminated?  Don't want to drive around with the headlights popped up all the time.

I got my relay thru Sunset (around 2004-05? would have to look) - the day time lights are in the fog lights not the headlights so no the headlights are not up and only the front fog\driving lights are on....

Pelican is researching the availability for me now.  Price they show is $96.25 but not sure if they can get it.  Wondering if it would be available in Canada since daytime driving lights are a requirement there so checking with Porsche Centre Langley as well.

Waylander, I had an inquiry into Teile to see what they can do, they are based in Europe so may have a solution.  The Langley dealer (Canada) is checking on what they do for failed relays since they are legally required in Canada.  Have the article from RL so that is a fall back, and maybe first choice..  Thanks.

Is it correct that US cars have Amber parking lights and clear fog lamps? Which lamp turns on with this modification? Do Canada cars have driving/fog lamps in place of parking/fog lamps?

Despite Flash's admonitions, I'm still looking for the relay Big Grin

No luck at the Langley dealer, NLA in Canada.  Not available thru Pelican. Tiele may have an idea for a source, will report when I hear back.

So, another stupid question is where is the relay panel it goes into.  It's not in the circuit panel in the engine compartment. I can find a fuse panel in the left (driver's) footwell up under the dash on the far left side but this panel doesn't have sockets for relays.  So it must be somewhere else?

Sculler, not sure about Canadian cars but my US car has an amber turn indicator/side marker cover and clear fog/high beam light cover.  The daylight running light is the clear fog light..

It goes under the dash - drivers side below the interior lights dimmer wheel. You should see one relay plugged in a spot for another one...

if you need it I can get a pix of where it goes...
