<acronym title='mass air flow'>MAF</acronym> screen?
#1

Are there options to replace the inlet screen (airflow straightener) on the MAF sensor? Mine is in bad shape with pieces missing, probably not a good thing to have plastic bits pushed through the engine, unless they're sitting at the bottom of the intake manifold.

There was someone on eBay that sold aluminum ones in different sizes. I was going to pick one up, but have not yet done that. Mine is missing pieces as well.

Yes I saw the honeycomb aluminum option. The challenge would be to remove the plastic screen without dropping pieces that could damage the thin wire, and then secure the aluminum part.

Another option would be to fit the aluminum aftermarket screen on the airbox outlet the MAF fits into, could do the trick. I might try that.

Poke around a bit, there was a direct replacement that came from Volvo for about $100. Of course, you could be bougi and get the one for a Ferrari ay about $7,000  :glare:

The 968 MAF was only used on one other car, the RS2

Replacement MAFs are serious money

A bunch of Bosch sensors from the same era worked the same, but indeed the only correct part is the 0280213017, shared with RS2.

Suspecting issues with mine, I found a 0280213012 from a Volvo which had been used successfully by other 968 owners, but fitted to my car the motor was most unhappy, would almost die each time revs dropped, and eventually triggered a CEL (oxygen regulation). My original sensor may not be out of calibration all that much after all.

Back to the original topic, I have attempted to remove the half broken air straightener to no avail, feels like I'll be making more damage by forcing the plastic out of the housing.

Air straighteners ahead of MAFs are important, they prevent turbulence that trigger erratic sensor readings, especially noticeable at idle. Our cars have a very short intake between air filter and MAF, the straightener is necessary. I think most 968 MAF sensors have partially missing straighteners, I wish a workable solution was available other than finding a used sensor with perfect screen.

When much of the grill on my MAF broke, I was very fortunate to find another 968 MAF ( internet search ) at a salvage yard , which coincidentally happened to be less than half hour drive from my house .   I picked it up for a ridiculously low price , can’t remember now what it was because it’s been ages since then, but I think it was something like $ 20 or $ 25 …
