AC Compressor Cracked Mounting Nub
#1

The other morning I went to start up my 94 cab. As soon as the engine turned over I heard this terrible rattling at idle that sounded like something was about to fall off. With increasing rpms it seemed to go away but it was bad enough that I was afraid of driving the car in the fears of it affecting a belt.

Upon further inspection it turned out that the lower mounting nub on the bottom of the AC compressor had cracked and the AC was only attached by one bolt now. I have no idea how it might have happened since I hadn't hit any large potholes or curbs as long as I have owned the car (2 years).

The car is a weekend toy for me and only gets driven if I can have the roof down. A new AC compressor is 6-800 installed. I have had a need for the AC twice I think in the time that I have owned the car. At this point I have no desire to pay for a new compressor that won't get used.

I was searching Paragons site and noticed their AC delete kit: http://www.paragon-products.com/product_p/....acdel.kit2.htm

Does anyone have any experience with this? It seems like the perfect solution to my problem, however it is for a 944 and i'm not sure if the 968 is too different.

I am looking forward to losing about 70 pounds though if this ends up working.

Thoughts?

The AC in the 944 is the same setup so that kit will work fine. The compressor is heavy, but it's not even close to 70lbs.

There is an AC delete for sale on rennlist: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/show...ad.php?t=321609

A/C compressor mounting bolt problems are not unusual. Your failure seems the extreme example though - the bolt held, but the compressor mounting lug failed. Good move with the "delete" kit - just remember that, if you get caught in rain, you'll have lost much of the effectiveness of the defrost function.

Yes, I deleted the AC on my 1987 924S (same engine as the 944 and same AC setup as the 968) and the only thing needed was the different mount for the alternater (it mounts in a lower position once the AC is gone) and the shorter belt. I did not delete anything else so the weight loss was not significant. After a few months of summer without AC I put the AC back and sold the bracket and belt to someone who was using their car for racing only. My car was a coupe so maybe a Cab would be more comfortable with no AC. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

i think the 70 lbs would also be including the condensor, clutch, hoses, et all - still likely not quite 70, but a pretty hefty amount off the front of the car

lol - as for a cab with no ac, yikes - it's actually worse in a cab when it's hot - if it gets over 85, i put that top up and crank the ac - that's one of the reasons i bought this car - i had a faster and better handling ragtop, but had no ac - i was fine in the bay area, but here in l.a., it's just too hot too often not to have it

I have a AC bracket that you are welcome too for the cost of shipping. It came out of my 924S autocross/track car. The total reduction in weight was around 58lbs, including all the hosts, condensors, wirings, etc. It is noticable, but I wouldn't do it to a car I drove day to day. Even unroute to event, the lack of AC in the NE is often painful!

So maybe I was a little optimistic with the 70 lbs, but even so it will let me eat that many more cheeseburgers before driving the car and it will still feel the same.

As for the A/C in the summer, well in the three summers that I have owned the car I have used the A/C about 4 or 5 times other then when I turn it on just to use the system every few days.

My personal rule for the car is that I don't drive it unless I can have the roof down. The boring cars are much more comfortable in the nasty weather what with having real roofs and all.

I think I am going to go ahead with the delete and see what happens. I may be interested in that bracked if it comes with the belt....
