Late model 968 A/C compressor interchangeablility
#1

My AC just crapped out (compressor froze and the clutch went). I have access to older 944 series compressors (shown on pelican parts as fitting late 944, S2, and early 968 up to 92), but I dont know if they will work on my 94 968. The compressor on mine is a Densu model, not a German make, but the 93-94 968's are listed as using a different, more expensive ($2,500) German compressor. Can I put an older on on there without issues such as different mounting structure, etc? Can the older compressors handle 134a? Its mid august, in Texas, during the hottest summer in a long long while, any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance,

-Rob

From what I have seen they are all the same compressor. The only difference with the newer ones was the different seals and oil that was used for R134A. All the compressors sold today should be up to the R134A standard.

Where in Austin do you live? I didn't think there were any other 968s in Austin (well, I do know of one other, but it belongs to a guy who doesn't drive it much, and he's trying to sell it).

As far as the AC compressor, I'll check when I get home, but the PO of my car bought a rebuilt one from a company in the Dallas area shortly before I bought the car from him five and a half years ago. It was very cheap - somethng like $200 - $300, and the last time I checked, the company was still in business. I'll check through my receipts when I get home, and let you know.

Yes, this summer has been brutal. No AC is definitely a no-go!

Thanks for the info, the compressor I have spare is from a 944 turbo, so It was likely r12 not 134a. Do you know how much of an issue the different oil might cause, I was planning on putting a 134a oil charge can in it anyway...

Cloud 9, I live in north central Austin (I35 and 183). Ive seen a few other 968s around: A sky blue cab a few years ago, a white cab frequently at Target, a black one near UT, a silver one near steck rd. (the owner also has a nice silver 924 turbo), and maybe a few others. Mine is a black 94, I drive it almost daily.

Let me know if you find the info on the place.

Thanks again!

The company is called Hancock Industries, on 2001 South 41st Street, Abilene, TX (although I seem to recall that they have moved), and the phone number I have for them is (325) 692-9290. In 2002 (longer ago than I thought), a rebuilt R134 compressor from them cost right at $300. Good luck.

Your car should of originally had R134a, so just make sure you get out all the old oil from that older compressor. It has a different type of oil in it that doesn't mix well with the R134a oil. You will also of course need to replace the receiver/dryer while your in there.

Thanks for all the help, and for the offer to sell the compressor. However, It seems Im on my way.

I had a used compressor that was r12 which I removed the old oil and put in the 134a oil (hopefully not a huge mistake!). Otherwise the compressor seems Identical in and out. After the swap all was good for a day, but now the AC 7.5 amp fuse is blowing repeatedly. Next try is to change out the magnetic coil to see if there is a short. Any other suggestions?

p.s. reciever/dryer? what and where is that? I hope I didnt leave something critical out!

The receiver/drier is the aluminum barrel shaped piece behind the drivers headlight. The ac receiver drier is used to take all of the water out of the ac system, and to take out any contaminants that may plug the ac system. The ac receiver drier should be changed every time you remove any ac component that exposes the sealed ac system to the atmosphere.
