Best place to get new compressor
#1

Ok so for the first time in my life I took my car to a place that doesn't specialize in Porsches. (mostly because I was unhappy with my last experience at my regular shop, and this place has done good work on all my other cars before)

Well, had to replace the ac compressor, and I'm having problems with it and they are saying that the first one was really hard to find and that they might have to one shipped from Germany or some such.

Anyway, just wanted to ask here, does that sound reasonable, or should I be able to point them to Paragon or Sunset or someone where these are readily available, or are they really like, impossible to find in the US?

Thanks!

Mark

My A/C compressor was replaced in mid-August by my OPC. I was told that the replacement item they received - from Germany - was one of only a handful remaining - and that the cost (if I'd had to pay for it, luckily it was a warranty replacement) was nearly $1,900.

You can try Griffiths:

IIRC someone here or on 968.net or Rennlist was happy with the Kuehl compressor they bought from them.

Paragon and Sunset Imports are good options as well.

The previouos owner of my car got a rebuilt compressor from Hancock Industries of Abilene, Texas. Their number is (325) 692-9290. The total price shown on the receipt is $289.50, plus a $100 core charge, refundable when the old compressor is sent in. This was in 2002, so I'm sure the price has gone up since then, but it's worth checking out.

A little lesson in prices going up - the compressor that I noted above, with a current price of nearly $1,900, was under $500 less than two years ago.

porsche has a standing policy about parts pricing related to stocking quantity - the fewer there are, the more they cost
