968 value if they only...
#1

As I was driving around yesterday, enjoying how quickly the SC takes this car into triple digit territory ( though I'm still bummed because it's way too smooth and does not "feel" any faster , lol ) I was thinking about what the market value of our cars might be if Porsche had produced the 968 with this much power in the N/A engine. They had the technology to do that, and I understand the various reasons why they did not, but I believe with this kind of power and given all the other attributes of the car, a well kept 968 sample would probably have a market value higher even than its original price.

Is this a tea you drink or an herb you inhale? Great thought!

It would have probably helped a fair bit. I've always thought the 968's have held their value so poorly largely because there were much better cars for less money (Mazda RX7 twin turbo, 300 ZX, Corvette, Supra turbo) available when it was new, especially when it came to horsepower for the money. Basically, the car was a dud that consistently finished dead last in contemporary comparison tests. It was still a decent car, and didn't finish last by a lot, but it just wasn't competitive, dollar-for-dollar. So yes, if Porsche had given in D1R supercharged-like horsepower, I'm sure it would have fared much better in both the new and the resale marketplace.

of course there will be those who will say "but on the track....." and try to play up the way the car handled and cornered by comparison, but in the end, we all measure cars by the simpler numbers. as great as we all think the 968 is, it paled by comparison in its day, in the "standard" forms of measurement, and at double the cost of the competition. that's exactly why i didn't buy one then.

of course, if the car did have the kind of power the SC kit produces, the 911 would now likely be a thing of the past.

i wanted an RX-7 TT for the longest time, and finally got to ride in one at autocross about a month ago. The bubbly interior looks dated and feels cheap, my head was hitting the roof in the passenger seat and i had to tilt my seat back to a position where i wouldn't want to be driving, and I really didn't feel like it was a car I would care to own. Maybe I overhyped myself from wanting one for so long or something...maybe getting to drive it would be a different story...who knows...but I'm glad I have the 968 and not an RX-7.

I still remember clearly driving down Market Street in San Francisco in 1992 and spotting my first 968. I thought it was such a beautiful vehicle. Yes, there were better cars at the time, and the 968 was WAY overpriced but it sure has held up compared to its contemporaries. Now we can pick up one...or two (or three?), for a reasonable cost, and make it (them) better than new!

The good news is that the 968 is an affordable Porsche. The bad news is that the 968 is an affordable Porsche.

I've had both an '85 RX-7 (GSL-SE - last year original body, larger 13B engine), and a '92 300ZX. The RX-7 had squirrelly handling. That car, and a friend's RX-7, are the only cars I've ever spun out. The 300ZX was more modern than the 968, and ran like a sewing machine, but didn't have the soul of the 968. I find my 968 very affordable when I calculate smiles per mile. As for being a Porsche, I love my 968 in spite of the fact that it's a Porsche.

I had a 93 RX7 twin turbo. It was the first and only car I've ever bought new. It was a spectacular car in every way, except for its pitiful gas mileage. I didn't even consider the 968 at the time, because its price was beyond ridiculous, especially considering it gave up about 20 hp to the RX7, and weighed about 300 lb more. Now, I consider the 968 a better overall car, but I'll always have a soft spot for the RX7. I did a quick check on autotrader awhile back, and found them selling in the $15 - $18K range, so slightly more than the average 968 Coupe.
