Hello racers and 968 drivers.
I am planning a shot at the 2010 SCCA National Championships racing in the STU class and also a PRO IT regional championship. Per the rules I am able to race the IT car in STU as it will not be that competitive. (Hah!) In Improved Touring trim the car is pretty basic on what you can do to it. In STU-Super Touring Under 3.0 I am able to run a turbo. It must be the same size as originally delivered on the 968 Tubo S. I'd have to pork the car up to 3300 pounds for the class but with a turbo the car could make some strong power.
I'd race the car in IT trim for the season and then put the tubo in the car for the runoffs in September. So far SCCA has indicated that as long as the motor is 3.0 or less I'm OK for STU (I'm asking a bunch more questions about turbo charging, number of cars manufactured, where sold etc...)
Here's a few questions - has anybody made their race car into a 968 Turbo S? Cannot be a 2.5 turbo as that was never in the 968 chassis from the factory. What power estimates might be made with a turbo - stock sized, stock turbo everything.
Was any 968 Turbo S factory delivered to the United States? So far nobody has said the car had to be a US model but that might come up...there were only like 15 made, right?
Cost - this is something that might bury the idea fast - any estimates on what it would cost to bolt on the correct size turbo and have it run reliably in race trim?
If I can't do the turbo I still think the car will be a force in STU. The class was built for former World Challenge Touring cars to have a place to retire and compete. STO or Super Touring Over 3.0 is for the GT cars.
Thanks for any thoughts and suggestions.

Ben,
You already know one of the best people in America to talk to about this. No doubt that turbo'ed cars (street or race) have had their issues.

As Bob said, none were delivered to the US. That said, at least two of them have made there way to the US. One is not too far from you. Pete at RS Barn owns turbo S number #10 (lucky dog).

Pete will think I'm insane contemplating a turbo when I'm spending more coin than I can afford on doing the head and other things.
Maybe I should rent his Turbo for the runoffs????

You thinking of Powerhaus? KMS or Kelley Moss Racing did some turbos and a 968 for sure.

333 - yes N/A during season and turbo for Runoffs - wanted to find out how difficult a conversion would be. Looks challenging and costly. Erik - yep, those rules are pretty restrictive and I run at 3300 as an ITR car in STU. Pete ...not likely I can afford this season - it sounds more expensive than a couple grand. Looks likely that I will leave the car in ITR trim and do my best at the Runoffs without any Turbo. I did request if the 944 Turbo could run in that class - cutoff year is 1990 and the Tubro was built through '91 I believe.
Can't wait to get my car back from the Barn and get it on the track. Also really looking forward to seeing how driving a motorhome to the track will make this more fun than sleeping in the trailer!
PS - SCCA did confirm - no Euro delivered cars. US only.
