Langley,

I just ordered my Auction Catalog at www.goodingco.com and may attend the auction, since 2 tickets are included with the Catalog. It would great if one our 968 enthusiasts were to purchase this car and bring it to the Porsche Only Swap Meet in Hershey on Saturday, April 21. As mentioned in the post, this is the first 968 Turbo RS's that was made (sold for $135k new) and I have models of both the original ADAC version plus the LeMans version that was built.

Let's see, sell the 57 Chevy (est. $50-65k), sell the 1994 968 (just got an offer of $35k at the local gas station) - oops still a little short, looks like all my Chevy and 968 memorabilia will also have to go - lol!

There is also a Turbo S clone for an estimate of $45 to $55. There is a guy here that has a Turbo RS clone. It is beautifully done car. He says he has looked on this forum but I don't know what his user name is. I have met him several times as he has been to the shop and does some PCA activities.

So, what you're saying is you go all in and add $150k just to have a Red Coupe that you never drive??? LOL

I only paid 1/10th of that for a red coupe I don't get to drive. But I suppose at least my excuse is freezing temps, ice and snow.

for its exclusivity and to keep as a collector item, may be, just may be, it justifies about $75K ..IMHO

Just replicate one, for a fraction of that. Then you wont feel bad about driving it, and enjoying as it was intended.

I think whoever buys it will stick it in a "museum" collection and won't feel bad about driving or not driving it.

If only the Australian dollar would go to something like 200:1 versus the USD, I might be a chance. If you bought it - it would collect dust. You could not drive it - particularly in anger, and to keep it genuine would be an astronomical cost.

The red car has a 30 hour engine in it so if you do drive it for long you will have an expensive rebuild ahead.

Is this the red car that was at Hershey a couple of years ago?

I didn't think the engines in the Turbo RS were that highly stressed. Why would it need a rebuild so soon?

While the Red Turbo RS is one of the original four built by the factory and has LeMans history, it has many, many upgrades that are not original or done by Porsche. Jason's (of Paragon Products) blue and white one is a much truer example to what the car would have started as.

Yeah, I know. My point is that you could have basically the same car for a fraction of an original factroy TRS. Sure its not a pure factory turbo car. Does it really matter though? Not if you want to enjoy, and actually drive your car. Kinda cool, cause we kinda know where to set the bar for the 968 market. For the most part anyway.

Agreed, but unfortunately, between the new Speed yellow coupe and the mint cab I just don't have the room right now so I'll have to leave the retirement fund alone for now.

i seriously doubt they will get anywhere near that kind of money for the car. to my knowledge it never won when it was raced in the day, and didn't even have a big name driver. vintage race cars don't get big dollars without that. if you tried to compete it today, you would risk losing the value completely, and i'm not even sure it would be competitive. sure, you could drag it out for a vintage race now and again and be fairly safe, but that's a pretty limited use of a car.

sorry, but i just don't get the attraction at all.

Competitive ? I would doubt in that respect it would even come close ; sure it's a decent racing car, but for less that half of the price they suggest / expect, you can have any one of a half dozen other cars that are so far above in all-around performance, they will simply annihilate it on any track . And nice looking ones ( Ferraris, etc ) you could also admire sitting in your garage. But then this is not what it's all about, its decent racing capability is just an added bonus to the exclusivity of the car so it definitely warrants a premium price for that, but more than a quarter million dollars ?! Crazy, but I do hope they find someone with a lot of disposable cash who is obsessed with owning 1 of 4 just for the sake of bragging rights..and the transaction gets enough publicity to raise the visibility and appreciation of all 968s out there..

i'm a pragmatist. exclusivity alone means nothing to me. that's why i don't generally collect things. sure, i have a couple of 968 things that nobody else has, and certainly that is rather cool, but i wouldn't pay a bunch of money to get them. if i can't use it for its intended purpose, i see no value in it.

i don't collect wine either. i drink it.

Wow, it sounds like the Turbo RS may go cheap if everyone feels like Bob. However, I agree with him that the car will sell for less - probably between $100k and $175k since most Porsche affecianados are not into 968's (sorry guys).

Jay, I want you to know that I had my garage queen, er, I mean the 968 coupe out last weekend - again. I drive it every 4 weeks in the winter and a lot during the warm months when there are a lot of PCA events. The car now has a whopping 14,448 miles on it and I never forgave you for making me break 14k at your event in Newtown - lol!

a lot? you really need to put at least 2k miles on these cars every year. failure to do that will start costing seals. i am in the same boat. i wasn't putting enough on the blue car and found quite a bit going on in there. the white car is close to being in jeopardy, as it barely sees enough miles. i'm figuring to lose a head gasket any time now, due entirely to letting it sit too much without being exercised. i think i have been able to hold off the ravages of time by taking it out once a year for a good 1000 romp, but i don't figure for that luck to hold out for long.
