968 Turbo RS for sale!
#81

I restored and refreshed my first two p-cars and it severely limited my enjoyment of them.

When I got this car the first thing I did was put a double-DIN stereo in it, and I have done many more things that just put my enjoyment of it over the moon.

To each his own.

I actually agree with everyone here. It is to each his own, and years ago I realized I had 2 choices. I could polish my car and look at it or I could drive and enjoy it. And if I drove it things were going to happen.

Stone chips, scuffs, busted windshields, the ever threat of a wreck and lots more cleaning to do. So I found the balance for me as you should for you.

A perfectly original average 968 with no famous former owner or racing history may indeed never roll across a collector car auction floor with people swooning all over it. But I just can't help but hope that, like the 914-6, someone wakes up one day and realizes that so many have been destroyed or ragged all to hell that a stand up tall original one is a find worth paying for.

I picked up my current ride with 14K on the clock. Was for sure a concurs winner (of course only after someone cleaned the dirt off of the underside of the pedals - what???). Because of its condition and mileage I paid a premium to market for sure. Bought it to drive it, not to look at it. Closing in on 30K miles and getting ready to clock another 3K in a few weeks on road trip #3. I've modded the heck out of it and plan to put in the SC - that will kill any chance for resale for sure (sorry Bob but FI scares people). Frankly I don't care.

Don't get me wrong, I like looking at cars, but there are plenty of rich guys and museums for that. Heck - just watch Mecum or Barrett Jackson and you can see hours of great old cars. And there are loads of local shows that one can attend.

But I bought the car to drive. when I was looking I drove everything I could find with 2 seats, no roof and a manual that I could afford (no Ferraris or Lambos in the hunt). The only other car that I really liked was the S2000. I just love the tactiles of the 968 and plan to drive it until it, or I drop. If I kill it I'll go looking for another, or find a low mileage S2000 and shove a turbo under the hood .

Bob you misunderstand what I said, I dont mean concours it to show it. I mean concours it so people swoon at a sharp looking car as it wizzes by them!!!

that's why i like vintage races. concours perfect cars, essentially stock, fender to fender, going at it. no sissies afraid to have somebody touch their car and leave a fingerprint on their garage queen because the judge, who also has a garage queen there, might see it and ding them.

i've always wanted a 968, and restored mine because i wanted a new one. never gave a thought to resale value.

i bought mine with almost 80k on the odo 3 years ago; better than fair condition consmetically but in need of the usual maint. it's got over 116k on the odo, a daily driver, with mods for recreational pca autocross. if i had bought it new in '94, i would have probably modded it then too.

i put it in 3 or 4 pca concours a year, street division, up to 200 miles away, no trailer, competing against cars with less than 20k original miles, and lost by 3/4 of a point. the judges think i'm nuts 'cause black is the worst color to show, but i get kudos from everyone that sees it 'cause it gets driven. i do the concours thing because you wouldn't see a 968 otherwise. it's fun to hear the "what's that?" question and when i open the hood, the supercharger always draws a crowd...

lol - it is always cool to see people stop and ogle your car. as long as you don't mind paying $60 to sit there all day and lose to those guys who wrap their car in a bubble, then i guess it's just fine. i've certainly paid that much to get nothing before, or worse, sneers and jeers (dating after 30 comes to mind)

that's one of the reasons coffee and cars still appeals to me though. i can put it there, show it off, not pay for it, and leave after only an hour, with no trophy concerns

to bring it back to the main topic, i suppose putting something in a museum also removes the stresses and issues of competing it, whether it be concours or racing.

Update - buyer of Porsche 968 Turbo RS $346,500 just informed me that he actually bought it for a friend in Colorado who has quite a stable of collector cars already. The car will not be in a Museum after all. Buyer will be attending the Hershey Porsche Swap Meet on Saturday, April 21 and promised me more details at that time.

Chris,

He indicated that the fellow had quite a car collection already so that should narrow it down. I am planning to ask for the new owner's name when I meet Prescott during the Hershey Swap Meet April 21st. He did indicate that the new owner would probably be willing to host a garage tour if it was organized.

Between you checking locally and me with Prescott on the 21st, we should be able to narrow it down. Sounds like an upcoming 968 event in Colorado - lol!

Here are a few photos of the car in its new home in Colorado. Sorry they're a bit blurry. Friend of mine knows the owner and visits him once a year or so...he snapped these for me when he was out there a couple months ago.
