650 hp stock, the new norm ?

I was told by a design engineer that this new shape for cars is partly due to CAD, which doesn't do smooth compound curves as well as hard angular ones. Incidentally, she loves the lines of the 968 and isn't a fan of the new angry bug supercars.

Angry bug - that's a good way to describe them!

I'm also disappointed with the new Toyota Surpa, and the new BMW Z4.  I think the outgoing Z4 is one of the prettiest designs in a long time, so I was disappointed to see how "creased" the new one is.  And the Supra is a bulbous, hacked-up mess.  Good to know I'll be saving the $60K to spend on track days in my 968!

Doesn't bother me, I never drive over the speed limit, officer.

Well, our cars were limited to 156 MPH  Smile

That should be fist done on a trial basis, if injuries and death statistics do not decrease after , say , a one year period  the law should not be enacted.   I think theories as to the degree of which speed contributes to any given accident and the ensuing injuries or death based on engineering , crash dummy testing, scene of real accident investigation data all have some merit,  but it's not absolutely conclusive until you test those theories by reducing the speed limits in the manner suggested and then evaluate the results .  You guys may be surprised ( maybe shocked ) to hear ME say this, but there is no reason whatsoever anyone should drive more than 100 mph,, anywhere !    And this does not conflict with my first statement, that was just an objection to what i feel may be arbitrary nanny-state rules, absent proof beyond a doubt that it does generate a benefit .

I have a feeling F1 is going to become very boring :-)

And this would no longer be permitted on the streets:

If you do a search on McLaren 650S, a lot of them have been crashed shortly after taking ownership. I suspect there is a steep learning curve to drive this machine.

I'm a firm believer in graduated driving licences (limit new drivers to 40 HP, and work their way up; certify on each vehicle/class of vehicle you drive) and increased training, instruction, and (much) more frequent recertifications.

The article noted that a current investigation is being conducted to see if the car was in a safe driving condition ... if that's not one of the most idiotic statements made, not sure what else would qualify .    186 MPH , not on a track, or a runway, or a straight highway stretch in the middle of nowhere , and not driven by a professional driver, and with a passenger on board  !    Seriously ?!   They're looking to find fault with the brakes, or tires, or anything for that matter that may have played a part in an idiot driving that car at 186 mph ?!        :glare:  :angry2:

I tend to agree, but if the builder supplied the car with insufficient tires (or tyres as it were) and they failed like they did with Ferrari here in the US many years ago, then they are on the hook for the crash.

But we all know that it would be a stretch to blame the car. At that age, he likely had no clue about how to handle such a machine. A tragedy for all involved, and one that was totally avoidable.

So it's announced today the the EU will be implementing speed limiters in all new cars from 2022

They will work by reading road signs or GPS and keep you to the correct speed for the road you are on

Nanny state here we go again

They could reduce accidents by far better training and as suggested limiting BHP

So rush out and buy your new 1000 BHP Taycan for 120k and have your driving strictly controlled, might as wellsave your cash and take the non existent public transport, it might be a lot faster

I know Its a clear sign that I am now officially an old curmudgeon, but I hate all of this new technology shit.  It's everywhere.  The first place you will see this on cars is a requirement from insurance companies to plug into your OBD or use a phone app to monitor your speed, deceleration, etc.  Allstate offers it as an incentive to reducing rates.  Fuck that.  Surveillance state is here.

Next we will see that human-piloted cars are not allowed on certain highways or in cities.  Within 35 years I predict an end to human-piloted cars anywhere.  On a nice country drive last week, of which Allstate knows not, I passed by a horse corral and stables.  How quaint I thought.  Won't be long boys before we have to trailer our cars to a place like this if we want to drive at all.  Enjoy it while you can, and encourage your kids to find other hobbies.

Funny you should mention the horse corral.  It wouldn't surpise me if in a few decades, human-driven cars fall into a similar category as horse riding today - something people to as a hobby, but of little practical use.  But I think this day may be a ways off, because the transition between all human-driven cars to all-autonomous cars will be brutal, as much from the legal as the technological aspect.  Personally, I've gotten to the point where I hate to drive anywhere but on the track, and autonomous cars can't arrive soon enough.  Driving has become nothing but aggravating combat with perpetual bumper-to-bumper gridlock, punctuated by boring, featureless expressways, at least where I live.  Yikes, I'm starting to sound like Flash!

Having spent a lifetime fighting insurance companies which are one of the roots of all evil and a catalyst for all other evil which ensues, I agree 100 % with this statement . I don’t have a big problem with a surveillance state f it involves something like installing cameras on every corner of every street to capture violent crime , but when it reaches into stuff like monototing your driving, and actually controlling it, we may as well just hang it up and prepare for the kumbaya , we’re here to help you help yourself , government . What next, banning foods which are not good for your health , because the government knows what’s best for us ? Ugh.

Ive done that the moment I bought all those devices . Some colleague asked me but what will you do if youre in an accident in a remote area and cant make a call , or if you get kidnapped ( seriously, someone would contemplate kidapping an old cantankerous man like me ?! ) and the only way for the authorities to locate you is via your phone GPS ? My answer : Ill take my chances, thanks, given the alternative of being monitored

I dont remember if I told you guys the story about Larry Ellisons Bugatti who is serviced ( for minor services like oil changes ) at my new mechanics shop . He took it there for an oil change and within half an hour he received a text from Bugatti in France advising him that his cars position was detected in front of a automotive service shop and reminding him that Bugatti strictly prohibits anything to be done to the car by any place other than the authorized Bugatti service center - for US issue cars , there is only one center in the entire U.S. I believe , and the main one on France . That clause is in the purchase contract . Being who he is, he told Bugatti to go take a flying f**k.. he can probably buy the entire company several times over and fire everyone, lol., but the point is the car has a GPS which cannot be turned off ( programmed in the ECU and no one has the capability to change that ) and the cars position among many other things is monitored by Bugattis system 24/7 . Bugatti claims its a theft prenevtion and recovery feature, in addition to monitoring the cars vital functions to assure if something is wrong with it they can alert you right away. Maybe thats partially true , but talk about zero privacy whatsoever ! And Id think those who can afford a $ 2.5 Mil car which also costs about $ 100 K annually to maintain would value their privacy more than anything else ! - Mr. Trump, why is your Bugatti parked in front of the Pussycat Ranch in Nevada ? Was the car stolen and you did not report it ? ;-)
