Give my regards to Ruby Talbot...

Hi Jay,

Thank you for your e-mail. You are correct that the watch was designed for Santos Dumont by Cartier in 1904 so we have changed the placard. However, we cannot confirm that the watch was produced for public wear during that year. Thank you again for your input and we hope to see you at the museum again soon.

Best regards,

Ruby Talbot

Dear Ms. Talbot,

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our private tour of the Mullin Collection on Tuesday, April 16th. Thank you for being so generous with your time, and helping to bring these classic cars to life.

In addition to the wonderful automobiles I was intrigued by the Cartier wristwatch and came home to look up some more details about its history and origin. I believe that your display case indicates that the watch was created in 1909, however, Wikipedia attributes this watch to 1904. I was wondering if you could clarify this information, or perhaps contact Wikipedia to correctly attribute the date on their site.

<p style="margin-left:30pt;">
1904 - The first Santos watch was created by Louis Cartier, as he designed a watch to be worn on wrist with a leather strap for his friend

Alberto Santos-Dumont

, a Brazilian aviator.

Thank you again for such a wonderful experience.

<p style="margin-left:30pt;">
Regards,

Jay

Will do.   I have just their "basic" tank watch , but I believe recently ( maybe even this year ? )  they released a new commemorative Santos .  Will have to look into that one, maybe divest of some of the other watches I hardly ever wear anymore , and get that Santos.

I looked up the Mullin museum's website.. man talk about splendid works of art on wheels ..unreal !!

Nope, only 450 hp. A wimp of a car. And it's not even street legal.

everything is getting more powerful.  we are waiting for the new AMG A-Class to come out with the 400hp twin turbocharged 2 liter.  right now they only have the 180 and 225hp versions out, but there will be a 300hp version in a month, and a 400hp version in about 4 months.  in a little hatchback.  crazy

What's remarkable is getting 400 hp out of a puny 2 L engine... regardless whether it's twin turbos, quad turbos, or turbos attached to a supercharger on that engine, lol .. But yeah, technology now can squeeze blood out of a stone so 400 , 500 , 600 + hp, like the thread title says is the norm for many run-of-the-mill cars, true supercars will pretty much all be in the 700 to 1000 hp category . A few already are knocking at the 1,000 hp door.

High horse powered cars have become prevalent on the track during my 7 years of tracking. Two hellcats showed up this past weekend at Summit Point. The number of Vette’s that are at each event continues to grow. The only balance occurring is the preponderance of boxsters and that is because of club racing. Life goes on. For people living in cities, how far away from the city must one drive to experience ones car?

And this is precisely why we see so many reports of supercars being totaled within days, and even within hours of being driven off the dealer showrooms .

A 968 with 800 hp.  Rap, you need this car! If not, Dan should chase it down for his stable.

Once you remove that front spoiler-splitter and the rear wing, what's left of the rest of the car will fit in your hatchback ;-)

I do like that 1,500 HP billet engine, a work of art IMO. Maybe they'll use it next time .

BTW, what's a " flipped head ". ? ( I realize that describes most of the GOP leadership in D.C. ,but I mean in automotive terms .. ) ;-) :-)

IIRC, a flipped head refers to when they use the intake for the exhaust and exhaust for the intake.I believe some of the Chevy V8s that were used in Formula racing were flipped in that the injectors were on the outside of the V and exhaust came out the center of the V. Also known as a reverse flow head.

I'm putting a flipped intake manifold on an LS motor I'm building, which means the throttle body will now be over the transmission vs. over the crank snout. Easy enough as the manifold is symetrical...just need to relocate a sensor, just unbolt, turn around and refasten. Stock 968 heads don't look quite symetrical (coolant passages don't seem to like up), so it adds an element of difficulty...

In this case I think a flipped cylinder head has nothing to do with driving the 968 in Australia. It's probably a custom head that puts the intake/exhaust manifolds on the opposite side compared to stock 968s. My guess is it gives more room to install the turbo and plumbing on the originally intake side of the block. The heads could be closed deck, which would make the flip "easier", but getting a custom head with coolant passages isn't that difficult work considering they carved the head out of a solid block of metal...

My guess is you could flip a stock 968 head (just unbolt and turn around) if you didn't need the coolant passages for the motor (i.e. drag race motor, etc.).

Dan does James Brown, I mean Maxine Walters, represent you?

James Brown ?! Hell yeah, I'd take anyone named James Brown representing me any time, any day ; you have to remember I'm from Cleveland so the name Jim Brown is revered above just about anyone else in US history , and then of course James Brown, the godfather of soul is only a small step below that, so...your point is.....?

Maxine is way south ( and left ) of here, so it's the SoCal crowd that get her representation . Still , she may be more level headed than Wagner , the escaped mental patient and republican ( but that's a redundancy nowadays . ) running in your neck of the woods who is threatening your current governor with physical harm in TV ads .. So let's not open that can of worms... ;-) :-)
