Don't tempt me ,  for  only $ 131 K  plus another $ 50 for some rubbing compound and a polisher which I presume is all that's needed to bring it back to " as good as new " condition , that could make one fine car !

Curious to know what the circumstances where for causing the 918 Spyder damage.  If that thing was flying and protected the driver/ passenger it would be impressive.  On the other hand, if it was a 10mph parking lot bender, you'd be a bit put out....   I guess you don't just show at at the local Meineke with it on a flatbed.

"  The McLaren 650S Spider, which costs over £215,000 new, can go from 0 to 62mph in just three seconds and has a top speed of 204mph.   "

And it can also easily go from  204 mph to 0 mph  in an astonishing zero seconds......when it hits a tree.

So whereas prior to this I was a passenger in a Tesla ( the top model - PS90D - or something Ike that ..) and treated to an off-the-line launch which was a bit frightening, I found out that it wasn't even in " ludicrous mode " . Yesterday I drove one in that ludicrous mode.

Not as frightning as being a passenger ( because of control at the wheel factor I'm sure ..so different sensation ) but hooooooly sh*t !!

A 2.8 sec 0-60 still feels insane ! That said, it still is completely devoid of the visceral experience a rumbling V-8 gives you, or even a powerful 4 with a nice exhaust note , lol, so not a car I'd ever own no matter how fast it is.

LOL, I was with my friend in Florida in February in his 719 HP Corvette beast...we pull up next to a Tesla and despite his roaring motor and crazy wheel spin, the Tesla silently pulled out ahead without a glance backward...I think my friend was pissed.

electric cars are the way of the future.  get used to it.  once they get just a bit more efficient on the batteries, it's over.

we are getting close to finally installing solar here at the house, using a battery backup for night, and getting completely off the grid.  once we can do that, i can see a day where we never go to the gas pump again.

They may be a way of the future but likely not for another 20 + years until the infrastructure to support them is in well in place..  At least in the Bay Area where you can't walk ten feet without bumping into a Tesla ( as well as other electric cars ) drivers are already facing issues finding enough available charging stations, other than at home that is.  And once you leave the state, in hope of a longer road trip, ... good luck !    But yeah, electric cars and solar energy will take over eventually,

not so sure about that.  again, once they get the batteries a bit more effective, you won't need charging stations.  as it is now, with a car that only has a 75mile range, we rarely use one.  drive to work, drive home, plug it in, it's good for the morning.  never even gotten close to running out.

people tend to freak out about the level of charge, because it takes so long to charge, and they don't want to be left stranded.  consequently they tend to plug them in a lot more often than they really need to.  with gasoline, you know you have a source at every corner, so you can let it get down to nearly empty, and not worry about getting home.

you'll probably start seeing charging stations popping up at every gas station not too far down the road.  it's another revenue stream the oil and power companies won't be able to keep their hands off of.

I believe they are working on a switchable battery solution. Pull into the station, they pull out the old battery and stick in a new one and away you go...

We own a Tesla 85D.  It blows most cars away without effort.  The infrastructure is here already.  You can drive across the country from one super charger to the next for free.  Charge time is about 40 minutes for another 240 miles or 20min for another 180 miles.  The car has 240 miles of range which is more than most folks drive in a day.  If/  when the batteries get cheaper and more efficient, I agree, these cars will really take off.

Another motivation is how badly Tesla is hurting the high end Audi's, BMW's and Mercedes.  More Tesla's were sold last year than all the A8 and 7-series.  The S-class still sells pretty well.

After working on an older car like the 968, there are an incredible number of parts that can go wrong. The electric cars are so much simplier.  The estimate is that we'll need to replace our Tesla battery in about 10 - 15 years, and it will cost about $10,000.  Consider how much it cost to fix all the stuff on the S-class over 10+ years.  Yikes!

The estimate I heard was 25% electric by 2025.  It's < 5% now.

I have an early deposit on a Tesla Model 3, looking forward to see how this model progresses and whether or not I should buy it when it comes available.  On the very few occasions I need to travel greater distances that the vehicle's range and re-charge station availability, there's always Avis.
