Finally got around to looking at all the maintenance records from the last owner of my new 968 I got 2 weeks ago.



I knew the 968 had higher maintenance requirements but I was surprised to find out that the previous owner who was very meticulous with his 968, spent $33,000 in maintenance costs over 8 years of ownership. That's an average $4125/year. There was one $5k invoice, one $4k, and two $2k invoices. In 8 years he went from 39k miles to 119k miles, that's 80k miles total (10k miles/year avg).



I'm hoping all the pampering done by the previous owner results in my 968 lasting many more miles. Wow, I felt I got a great deal $42k original price + $33k maintenance = $75k car! Yikes.



Plan to have it as a daily driver!



I'm hearing that you should budget $2k/year on maintenance.

My budget is 10% of the sticker per year (same for my boat). So if the car cost $50k, figure $5k per year to keep it in top shape. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

If you do your own repairs is should be far less than that per/year for maintenance.

Rule number 1: Never add up the bills..!!



Rule number 2: Over a long period of time the maintanace cost is constant.., so if the PO spent a lot, hopefully you should be OK for some time. Similarly buying a car which was maintained on the cheap, you will end up paying..

33 thousand is just crazy. There have been years when all I did was an oil change and gas. I was using my car as a daily driver for some time as well. Now I am spending a few bucks on parts to fix oil leaks and freshen up the front end. Oh and larger wheels and tires.

Armando(like Madridcab says): I have another type of charge to add. It's called the "Catch Up" cost. Here is what I mean:



January 08: received 968 (was told it was in 'excellent' shape with NO problems) 12,500$

Jan 08: noticed on first drive the trans noise: 2000$ for new used trans

Feb 08: leaks, front main and power steering lines and reservoir: 100$

Carpet falling apart after years of sun: 5-600$

Wind deflector hinges crumbling: 50$

Driver door stop: 30$

April 08: AC/power belt tensioners: 90$

front bushings: 130$

Fuel gauge repair: 90$ for tank sender (but really needed 100$ for in-cluster power supply)

various bulbs and l;ittle things:30$

Remove cone filter and replace with KN and original box: 140$

Radiator: shifte to one side and leaking(if noticed and replaced, I would not have to do it):400$





"Catch up" total ~3570$. If car had been taken care of properly, this would have been much lower. But then the owner could have put it into the sale price.....and I do all my own repairs.

I tallied up my 1992 coupe that I have had since Sept 2004. I have driven it just about 108,000 km (70K miles?) and have spent about $50K in maintenance and repairs (not including today). But I am still having fun.

Same thing with me, I drive about 3K miles a year but my old cab won't need anything so I would end up doing just an oil change.

it never ceases to amaze me at how little people value their time - time is money to me, so i don't count doing it myself as a discount - since i work for myself, every minute i am not generating revenue, is money lost - even when i take time off, i count it as money "spent" (there is probably some couch time in my future about how i cannot enjoy a vacation) - the way it works out though, if i have to do it myself, it is a LOT more expensive than paying a shop to do it - there is no "free" time for me



33k in 8 years is a bit high - i would have expected about half of that



that being said, i have spent a lot more on mine in the 5 years since i bought it - but, i'm following rule 1, and consequently also not telling the boss



by the way, watch out on the tensioner rod - there was a recent post on a failed one

Xrad - yeah, I know. My problem is I hate things not working (they bug me at work about this and say that I am the most anal person they know about cars) and I don't know how to fix stuff well. My last "big adventure" was replacing the wiper blades - that cost me a windshield when the arm fell down on the glass. I haven't a garage and I work far to much. As Flash said, which describes me too, I need to work to make money and I can work all I want. I would rather do what I know how to do and use the proceeds to pay for stuff that I don't know how to do.



By comparison, my 92 cab, owned for just over two years and driven 20,000 km, has cost me only about $2000. That included 48,000 km regular service and two rear tires also.



If you start with a good car (and don't do mods!!!) it makes a difference.

KIM: I'm glad your a perfectionist when it comes to the 968's! If you ever sell, someone will be a lucky buyer.





I am all for balancing pleasure and income/work. If at all possible, the less work, the more money, the better(but it never really works out like that).

rd- perhaps it's my upbringing - perhaps it's leftovers from owning a shop - i also enjoy tinkering on the cars, but still equate it to money



i have been fortunate that nearly every career i have had has been something i love doing, so differentiating between work and pleasure is often difficult, and the line very blurry



my work is my pleasure, but i always think of time wasted or spent in terms of money - i have no problem "spending" time on pleasures, but i want to maximize that time



if i can pay somebody else to do something, while i can then pursue something either more profitable or more pleasurable, then i find that to be a better expenditure



in either case, i make more than a shop charges, and most jobs on a car are more drudge to me than pleasure, so it's better for me to let them handle those, and leave the fun stuff (mods and such) to me - that way i get to have my cake and eat it too



as an example, i let the dealerships handle the BMW and the Denali, even on simple things like an oil change, but i play with the porsche

I am amazed to read your post that says that these cars only need oil changes and they are good to go as DD with a bit of work. You are a lucky man!

How long can a clutch, pinion bearing, clutch hose line, water pump, battery or cam belt last?

All of these cars are 13 - 16 years old!

Porsche + age = expense.

Anyone who has checked out the price on retail parts for these babies, at a Porsche dealer, had better be ready for "German sticker shock".

If you can afford a 968, they are amazing cars to drive. I drive mine as a DD, and having had BMW's, 911's and Mercedes Benz SL's, I love my 968 the most! It's like being 17 again in my '57 Chevy when I put my foot in it, but as refined as my 'Benz.

Anyone who buys a Porsche 968 as a DD and expects it to be a low cost street rocket to maintain will be sadly mistaken.



If you buy a new 911 for about $125K or a used 968 for about $ 15K and drive and maintain the 968 for 10 years, your break-even point is $11,000 per year in maintenance. $33k over 8 years is cheap and to be expected.
